i really loved this movie. although i do also see the similarities with event horizon, i think it stands on its own pretty well too. yeah, some of the characters are interchangable with EH but like someone said earlier, most sci-fi plots have been so terribly overused, that they have become cliches that are almost impossible to avoid. still a great effort. looking forward to more form this guy.

I saw this at the Arclight in Hollywood on Saturday night, knowing next to nothing about it. I'd heard the title before, but that's about it. So, I was pleasantly surprised and shocked at the first third or so of the movie. I was like, "how the eff did I not hear anything more about this?!"

Spoiler: show
Then, things started to turn for the worse. This is essentially Event Horizon II. Instead of Uranus and black holes, it's the Sun and a bomb. I was really disappointed with the decisions made with the latter half of the movie. There's a joke made about aliens picking off the crew one-by-one, an apparent wink at audiences accustomed to the now-conventional plots of such movies. Unfortunately, that's exactly what Sunshine turns into! WTF! Substitute Sam Neill for Captain Sunburn and it's Event Horizon all over again. What started out as an A movie turned into a C by the end.

Definitely worth seeing for the outstanding fx.

Just saw this and I completely agree with you, pants.

Man this movie is fucking incredible. One of the best I have seen this decade.

I agree that the plot turn towards the near end was kind of shitty. Then again, there were some terrifying and grim moments earlier that lead up to it and kind of make the whole thing even more foreboding. The best part about the twist towards the end, though, was the quote that came out of it, something like this:

Spoiler: show
"For seven years I spoke with God. He told me to take us all to Heaven."

Pretty much the best line ever.
.

Also, the fact that this movie had Ujio (of The Last Samurai) in it made me so happy. He is one of my favorite actors and he acted magnificently. Actually, I thought everyone was a great actor except for the physicist main character, and the uppity young guy. The psychologist also did a wonderful job acting I thought.

Overall this is one of the darkest and most grim movies I have ever seen, which is why it is so awesome. The worst thing about it though, the one thing that almost ruined the movie, was the very very end!

Spoiler: show
I was so pissed when the sun was revived. I think this movie would have gone from being great to legendary if the sun had died at the end, it would have fit so much better and the movie would have been much more powerful.

edit: found the real quote

I watched this on blu-ray a few weeks back. Visually stunning but the story towards the end is kinda ok.

I thought it was really, really dissapointing. Seemed to go completely by the numbers.

If this goes by the numbers, I would like to hear some sci-fi movies which you think don't go by the numbers. I am being serious, because I want to see them.

I agree that it wasn't exactly the most creative plot in history, but it was certainly much darker and more depressing than stuff you routinely see in theaters. That is why I liked it so much. It was fucking bleak.

Well you have to remember that my favorite flick is 2001, and I also really like stuff like Stalker. I don't like most sci-fi films because they're just all the same: people are on a space ship, they have a goal, shit goes wrong, lots of them die, and they still reach their goal eventually. I get what you're saying about it being bleak, but this idea has been done before in Bradbury's "The Golden Apples of the Sun" in a much better way. I think Boyle had the right intent to make a very different kind of sci-fi film, but it wasn't executed properly and the end result was ho-hum. There were parts I still liked very much, like his dream about falling into the sun and how that was tied into the end.

Am I the only one who thinks this is the greatest science fiction movie ever made?

I watched this about 8 times last year while living with my old roommates who had the DVD. I asked for it for Christmas and didn't get it until my birthday which was a couple weeks ago. So after going for about 6 months without seeing it, I watched it again tonight. Blew my mind again.

It's probably in my top 5 movies ever.

Whoever hasn't seen this, needs to. Then again, I recognize that my taste in movies is pretty terrible, so take my advice with that in mind.

The more I watch this movie the more I fall in love with the characters. The psychologist and the Captain are fucking brilliant. I've changed my mind and I think the physicist and computer scientist are outstanding as well.

I also love the ending now. At first, I really wanted it to be reversed. But I've gotten used to this one and I think it's perfect.

I respect anyone's opinion about this movie being decent and enjoyable, despite my low regard for it. But to call it the "greatest sci-fi movie ever made?" You're gonna have to explain that one.

Those few different things need some context.

Still think this movie could have been a lot better.

Best sci-fi film ever is either Stalker or 2001.

I don't even remember what actually happens in it. I remember i liked it though, I should watch it again sometime. Danny Boyle is great.
