Saw it this morning. It's been a while since I've been out to the cinemas.
There must've been like just 2 empty seats in my session. Sheesh. I haven't been in such a packed session in a long long time. And this film definitely deserves to have this kind of packed audience. For a film about 1980s East Germany, it scares me how many times I got shivers up my spine as I translated the material in the film to current trends and attitudes in my government.
Entirely gripping. Was this fictional or factual? I don't imagine there'd none of cases like these in the Stasi era. Either way, 9 / 10

just saw this yesterday; it was ok, but i felt like i had seen it before-nothing unique.
i also saw Black Book, which i thought was much better- shocked to see the same guy, Sebastian Koch, i think his name is, in both flix......
I saw both of them, and The Lives of Others was far better for me. I mean, both movies are different, even the historical moment is different. Black Book is really good, but Lives of Others is... very deep, and makes the audience think about many things. I agree the ending is GREAT. I feel like it's a great story, told in an unique way. And the performances are really good too... I believe the topic es not something new (how many films about communism in Germany have we seen?), but the point of view is unique, the same as Goodbye Lenin! And I think it's positive that German directors can start talking about something that happened such short time ago...

maybe i just enjoyed the action more in Black Book; but still thought LIves was simply good, not great... what did it make you think about and how was the point of view unique to you?

Well, I agree that the action in Black Book is great! But, once again, I have to say both of them are DIFFERENT types of films...
I'll try to answer your question: The main reason I think it's a great movie is because what happened to both artists in the movie is not something that just happened in Germany while the communism regime. I believe the best movies are those that can go from a particular case to an universal message. I think that in many countries lots of people had spies following them, even in my country (I was born and I live in Argentina), many artists were persecuted because of their ideas. Even today, in a world so called "democratic", governments -so called "democratic"- don't respect people's rights, and specially the right to believe, think and say whatever they want, and still torture disidents...
I hope my idea is understandable
(And, what makes it brillant are the performances -specially Koch and Muhe-, the script, some dialogues and the ending)

This came up on the Netflix que. Excellent movie. Fair or not I frequently feel let down by well reviewed films but this lived up to its reputation. The last 15 minutes or so is more like an epilogue than actual ending but it successfully picks you up after what would otherwise be a dour final act. A few little pieces of nifty foreshadowing and recalls here & there too.
