Since viewing there are a lot of Kerouac fans on here, I figured you guys would be able to help me out here.

The books I'm looking for are, as I've described them before, "Seinfeld" books. They're these books about nothing in particular, other than life "as it comes." I'm talking about books like Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, Hunter S Thompson's The Rum Diary (my favorite book ever), Kerouac's Dharma Bums. Y'know what I mean?

I'm looking to open up to this genre, if it even is one. Anyway, can anybody point me, and anyone else interested in this "genre," towards some suggestions? I love these books about guys wandering around cool cities, drinking and just sort of learning as life comes.

I hope this makes sense, but I fear it doesn't. Can you help a brotha out?

Well the Rum Diary and Sun Also Rises are some of my favorite books ever, so you might be interested in what I have to say, but this probably isn't exactly what you're looking for. I've just finished One Hundred Years of Solitude and it is undoubtedly in my top 3 books ever (perhaps best). Its about life, family, imagination, war, everything that one encounters in life. Its not really a "guy walking around a city" novel, but it is about the history of a town and family and its beautifully written. its very hard to describe, since its not really about anything in particular and is written in the magic realism style.

if you like the rum diary so much then read thompson's the proud highway, a lot of which takes place when he was writing that book and it is discussed numerous times.

I'm actually reading this book right now. I love it and can tell it will undoubtedly be one of my top books ever, but I'm looking for something more... set in contemporary times if that makes sense? 20th century-ish type stuff.

Sounds like you want to start getting into Charles Bukowski. Read Ham On Rye first and then follow that up with Post Office, Women, and all of his other novels. Pretty much exactly what you're looking for.

Maybe you should read some reviews for The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami and some of his other books. They might interest you.

I've read Ham on Rye... I liked it, but it didn't measure up to the others I mentioned, at least not in my mind. He's good, he's just too... blunt, I guess.

not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for but there are a couple of books by a guy named Jim Harrison that come to mind - Dalva and The Road Home.
