Post two films (or more, if you can connect them) that you think make great companions to each other. That is, not sequels, but films that explore similar themes or devices and generally have a really interesting "connection" to them. These can be extremely obvious (like my example) or more tenuous, the only thing that matters is having a good argument as to why they could be seen as having this sort of connection. I'll start with:

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)/AI: Artificial Intelligence (2001)

Two of my favorite films, both of these explore the implications of advanced technology, specifically self-aware artificial intelligence, and do so in a thoroughly groundbreaking fashion. The first is generally regarded as a classic (and is my favorite film), but I think the second is in many ways just as fascinating and has not received the recognition or the acclaim that it deserves. While the two are miles apart in terms of story and execution, both films have multiple "endings," and require a good deal of thought to really understand and enjoy. Furthermore, although AI was a collaboration with Stephen Spielberg, these films can be seen as different sides of Stanley Kubrick's thoughts on artificial intelligence, it's potential for great storytelling, and it's truly enormous implications for mankind. If you've only seen these once or have never thought about them in concert, give them a careful viewing. If films are food for thought, these two make truly make a feast.

Anyone else?

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas/American Psycho

They both feature characters reacting extremely to a society which has lost its soul, so much so that their behavior goes unnoticed and/or unpunished despite its viciousness.

Hmmm, that's a pretty good one.

I made a thread quite similar to this a few months back, but I don't remember the title. Anyhow:

Donnie Brasco (1997)/Hard Eight (1996)

Both films explore the relationship between an older criminal and a young man that they take under their wing. Hard Eight has a plot twist that shows quite a different motive than Pacino in Donnie Brasco, but both are superb character studies.

I just woke up so my brain is still much. I'll post more later.
