I adore this film. Criminally over-shadowed by Goodfellas, this showcases stellar performances from the 3 lead roles (De Niro, Stone, Pesci) set adopt a seedy and gaudy Las Vegas. My favourite parts include:
- De Niro and Pesci meet in the desert - De Niro meets Stone in the restaurant after she ties up her daughter - The head-in-a-vice scene - Dealing with cheating customers - The House of the Rising Sun

Don't get me wrong though - I do love Casino (I'll watch it every couple of years). But no matter how much I get into it, or how great some of the scenes are, it just feels like deja vu after the superior Goodfellas. I mean, Pesci plays the same exact character to a "T". Plus Scorsese used a couple of the same songs from Goodfellas in Casino on the soundtrack. As great as Scorsese is, he's not so great as to where he can rip himself off without people taking notice.

I agree. I really think Scorcese should have gone with different actors instead of Pesci/DeNiro.

It deserves more love, so give it!
you left out De Niro walking into the diner on Stone and James Woods as her scummy boyfriend.
i didn't enjoy this at all. the inevitable comparison GoodFellas made it impossible. it was so inferior. i didn't like sharon stone in this at all too.
i think goodfellas loses all of its steam in the last 45 minutes... i like casino better
yeah, it moved kind of slow during the whole sequence where he's driving around all over town coked out of his mind...

*slaps head* of course! Although I also forgot De Niro's reconciliatory dinner date with his wife.

I gotta say, I'm a bit surprised at the lukewarm reaction this has received. I always viewed this as an excellent film. If Goodfellas were taken out of the picture, would you like Casino more?

I'm getting into a stretch of movies I've been meaning to see but haven't. Titles like 12 Angry Men and To Kill a Mockingbird to 2001 to Network to Blade Runner and Donnie Brasco. There's a bunch of them.

I think you have to have read both books to give an opinion on both movies. Most people will give Goodfellas a huge edge movie-wise. "Wiseguy"(what Goodfellas is based on) is a tremendous book but the book Casino is even better with a much better story. Therefore i think the movie Casino doesn't get the credit it deserves, also because the movie came out about 5 years later than Goodfellas. Both films have outstanding acting but i think overall the directing in Goodfellas is a bit better and there are many more classic scnes/lines from Goodfellas. Either way, both are great movies and great books.

One thing that's always bothered me about this movie is the DeNiro character's undying and totally forgiving love for Stone's character. I don't care how much I loved a woman - if she tied my daughter to the bed so she could go somewhere and get high, the bitch wouldn't only be divorced in a heartbeat, but I'd have had my goons beat her within an inch of her life. I'm not condemning the movie for it, because Ace is such a fuck-up for Stone that it's believable, but it made me sick to think that some men would actually behave like he did in that situation.

I might be wrong, but I think they split up for good after she ties up the daughter.
