Spaced Remake in Development Edgar Wright's cult hit could be coming to FOX... and Wright isn't excited. by Eric Goldman <A HREF="http://de.ign.com/event.ng/Type%3dclick%26FlightID%3d66229%26AdID%3d71354%26TargetID%3d9818%26Targets%3d9818,8597,8297,10619,11619%26Values%3d25,30,46,50,60,72,82,92,100,110,150,157,218,225,226,227,236,240,268,1187,1204,1481,1503,1591,1823,2679,2690,2721,3887,4056,4295,4508,4799,5999,6082,6296,6612,6623,6643,8050,8152,8211,8243,8245,8254,8255,8257,8259,8486%26RawValues%3d%26Redirect%3dhttp://myspace.com/scifitv" target="_blank"><IMG SRC="http://ads.ign.com/advertisers/FIM/AU/afterworld/300x250.jpg" WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=250 BORDER=0></A>
US, October 30, 2007 - The British cult hit Spaced could get an American remake, according to both Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. The series has gained interest and popularity through the years, as several key participants -- Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost -- went on to success with the films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
Spaced is in development at FOX with executive producers McG and Robert Green attached, along with Adam Burr (The New Adventures of Old Christine, Desperate Housewives, Will and Grace), who will write the pilot. The original series ran from 1999 - 2001 and starred Pegg and Jessica Stevenson, who wrote the episodes together, as roommates and Frost as their military obsessed friend. Wright directed every episode. The show was known for its frequent and elaborate pop culture jokes and references, as it centered around a particularly geeky group - Pegg's character worked at a comic book store.
What's bound to get fans up Wright and Pegg upset (this writer included) is that Wright has posted on his MySpace page that "no-one has been in touch with me at all" regarding the remake. He adds that "Simon [Pegg] was never contacted either. I don't really want to get involved at all, but it infuriates me that they would a) never bother to get in touch but still b) splash me and Simon's names all over the trade announcements and infer that we're involved in the same way Ricky [Gervais] & Steve [Merchant] were with The Office [remake]."

i hope this doesnt go ahead.

Fucking hell US TV is shit. Everytime I've been there I've been driven insane by the sheer quantity of adverts and repeats. The American version of Spaced, like the the US Office, is going to be fucking shit.

That said, I really don't know if UK TV could produce a Carnivale or a Heroes.

Yeah but Heroes is shit too. Ze Vife forced me to watch the whole series with her and I was left distinctly underwhelmed, too slow. It was a series that could have been made in ten episodes not 24.

Funny you should mention that. Whilst I don't agree with your opinion on the quality of the Heroes, it is true that certain US shows tend to drag onwards. Prison Break I gave up on after it went on and on and on and on. Carnivale, whilst being absolutely magnificent, does take a bit of getting used to it with its slow-moving plot. And let's not even mention Lost
I suppose all in all its hard to find a balance. However, flip the argument round and you can easily criticise some British TV series of being WAY too short. Only 6 episodes per series of a Blackadder or a Peep Show is criminal! Of course, quality is better than quantity but still!

who knows...maybe they'll improve upon it like they did with the office.

the office was eventually made into its own thing, and now i think the characters are more interesting than the original. the 1st season wasn't as good as the original, but now its better... anyway the british comedy isn't half as clever as they make it out to be. out of the british shows i've seen, i think the percentage of british humor that is smart is the same percentage that american is. maybe less. there's almost always more fart jokes and over acting in british comedy
the only thing you guys got going for you that we don't is the BBC being government owned, other than that get off your high horse with your 25 frames per second and your black adder, and realize your tv isn't that great

The Office turned out good. I do hate the American versions of the Gordon Ramsey shows....all he does is yell on the Amercian shows, he comes off as a good guy on the British series....of course my wife only likes it when he yells so I guess they have a good formula...

US television gave us South Park and that's better than any UK show I've seen, ever.
