Weta Digital to Create Silver Surfer FX
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
September 24, 2006

20th Century Fox has picked Academy Award-winning visual effects house Weta Digital to oversee the upcoming film Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer. The studio tapped Weta to create a state-of-the-art version of the Marvel Comics character Silver Surfer.

Noted character actor Doug Jones (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy) will provide performance and movement references for Weta, in a process similar to the way Andy Serkis portrayed Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The voice casting of Silver Surfer has yet to be determined.

The Hollywood Reporter says Weta has developed an advanced computer-generated animation process that employs motion-capture techniques updated to add further dimensionality to the liquid-metal hero.

I challenge you sir, to a duel.

Silver Surfer is my favorite comic character and the most powerful "good-guy" in the Marvel Universe. I hope they do him and his powers justice.

What does that have to do with the gayest title ever?

Do we know if Galactus in this for sure? If so, I'm there.

There were parts I like about the first one, mostly Chris Evans as Johnny and his relationship with Ben. But I absolutely hated the ham-fisted and flat out boring direction of Tim Story. But who knows, maybe this will be better.

i cant fathom having the silver surfer without a glimpse of G. first movies usually do suck, cause you have to explain the origin, and develope the characters (in comic book movies) the second one will be much much better

Maybe they'll end it with a cliffhanger tease (a huge one) of big G coming up on Earth, Silver Surfer saying "see guys, I told ya so!"

The first one of these was the worst superhero movie since that Captain America movie. Somehow, they found a way to make it even more buttsex ready.

see i disagree, it may not have been the best, but it captured the spirit of the FF the way i remembered it. a very dysfunctional family at best, but when push came to shove, they stuck up for each other

Yeah, all that was there. It just wasn't done well. In fact, The Incredibles destroys FF in terms of effectiveness and entertainment.

I agree that they captured the spirit, but something just didn't seem right about the movie. I can't quite put my finger on it. There's the obvious stuff like Doom being an American, but moreso I think it was the "MTV-ization" of the movie. It seems to have been made to appeal to the broadest audience possible. Then again, if any superhero(es) should appeal to a broader audience, it would be the FF4. But making a movie to appeal to everyone usually results in mediocre crap, which is what I think of the movie.

IESB.net caught up with 20th Century Fox chairman Tom Rothman who talked about various projects like the "X-Men" spinoffs, AVP2, Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer and more. Here's a clip in which he confirms Galactus will be seen in the "Fantastic Four" sequel:

IESB: Is he going to look like anything like we've seen him in the comic books?

TR: Yes, I think that Galactus, look, I don't want to give away too much, right, but I will say this, Galactus will appear and fans will not be disappointed.

HAHAHAHAH! That's coming from the guy behind AVP, X-Men 3, and Fantastic Four.

Maybe fans of those movies won't be disappointed. Oh well for the rest of us.
