Saw the episode only once, during a homebrew wine-addled Futurama DVD marathon. My buddy and I needed to stand up and walk around, and take a breather after that. We both turned into a couple of wimps after that scene. I remember my buddy telling me that this episode was produced with the intention of going for an emmy, but I don't know ... he's a bigger Futurama-head than I am. I have to find my dog and hug her really hard whenever I think about that episode.

After what I said on the last oage, why in the fuck did I just watch that?! That's twice I've seen that episode now (or at least that part) - never again.
I've got a 5-month old, 60+ pound Bernese Mountain Dog puppy that worships the ground I walk on - I need to go give him a cuddle right now.

He's not taking a nap. He was waiting for Frye to get done work. Frye fell into the time machine on a pizza delivery - therefore never making it back to the pizza joint. So the super loyal dog waited by the shop until it died.

A dirt nap.

I'm a sucker for dogs. So any abandoned-dog or dying-dog story hits me very hard.
I can't help thinking this episode was at least partially inspired by the story of Argos. In greek mythology, Argos was Odysseus' loyal dog who waited for his master's return from Troy. While most everybody presumed Odysseus dead, Argos sat there waiting for twenty full years, neglected and full of fleas.
Finally one day he spotted Odysseus, disguised as a beggar in a crowd when he returned to Ithaca. Upon recognizing Odysseus, Argos, old and weak, dropped his ears and tried his best to wag his tail. Having finally seen his master again, Argos let out a final whimper and died.
Sad, sad stuff.

This story I did not know.

i always thought it was sad in that episode of south park where cartman has that kid's parents killed and feeds him their remains in chili, then he started licking the kid's tears. i always felt bad for that kid. it was kind of funny though in that later episode where he gives the kid a gift basket as an apology.

Oh man. That may be my favorite moment in the entire South Park series so far. So fucking deranged.
