'Atonement' leads Golden Globe nominations

(CNN) -- "Atonement," the drama based on the Ian McEwan novel about a shattered love affair, led all films with seven nominations at Thursday's announcement for the 65th annual Golden Globes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which oversees the Globes, nominated seven films in the best drama category. Aside from "Atonement," the other nominees are "American Gangster," "Eastern Promises," "The Great Debaters," "Michael Clayton," "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood."

"Atonement" stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy received nominations in lead acting categories. Director Joe Wright, screenwriter Christopher Hampton and composer Dario Marianelli also earned nods.

Other best actor in a drama nominees are George Clooney ("Michael Clayton"), Daniel Day-Lewis ("There Will Be Blood"), Viggo Mortensen ("Eastern Promises") and Denzel Washington ("American Gangster").

Aside from Knightley, best actress in a drama nominees are Cate Blanchett ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age"), Julie Christie ("Away From Her"), Jodie Foster ("The Brave One") and Angelina Jolie ("A Mighty Heart").

"Sweeney Todd," the Tim Burton-directed musical based on the Tony Award winner by Stephen Sondheim, earned nominations for best comedy or musical, director Burton and its two leads, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Other nominees for best comedy or musical are "Across the Universe," "Charlie Wilson's War," "Hairspray" and "Juno."

Ryan Gosling ("Lars and the Real Girl"), Tom Hanks ("Charlie Wilson's War"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Savages") and John C. Reilly ("Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story") also earned lead acting nominations for a comedy or musical.

The other nominees for best actress in a comedy/musical are Amy Adams ("Enchanted"), Nikki Blonsky ("Hairspray"), Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose") and Ellen Page ("Juno").

The Coen brothers earned nominations for both directing and writing "No Country for Old Men," based on the Cormac McCarthy novel.

Julian Schnabel ("The Diving Bell and the Butterfly") and Ridley Scott ("American Gangster") round out the directing category.

One award is certain: Steven Spielberg will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field" from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Globes organization.

The press association, which votes for the awards, is an organization of approximately 100 people who cover film for international and overseas organizations.

Despite the organization's small size, the awards are considered a harbinger for the Academy Awards, the film business' biggest prize.

The strike by the Writers Guild of America, whose members walked off the job in November over a variety of issues including Internet revenues, may complicate the awards broadcast. Many awards shows are written under guild contract, and the Globes may need dispensation to use writers for the show.

The Globes are scheduled to be awarded January 13 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Oscars I don't mind. I can't stand the Golden Globes. "Babel" won last year? Is that a sick fucking joke?

Ridley Scott got nominated over PTA? "American Gangster" and "The Great Debaters" won't even be nominated for best picture at the Oscars guranteed.

Denzel was good in American Gangster, but nothing special. I guess they just had to throw a minority into the mix this year, huh? :shake:

they tried interweaving 3 or 4 different stories together and it really didn't work at all. And by that time I was sick of this "Crash" like bullshit. Thank you "Traffic" for being a damn good film and starting all this.

Denzel was good sure, but yeah nothing too special. When I walked out my father and i just gave a shrug of the shoulders because it wasn't anything we haven't seen before.

I guess it'll be 3+ pages of

Agreed re: Denzel Washington but I'm not a big fan to begin with. I've only been REALLY impressed by his performances a handful of times. I don't think he's bad or anything, I just don't like his acting style or acting choices.

I don't think his nomination has to do with the fact that he's a minority. I just think they like nominating him. He's an award seasons favorite.

Atonement has gotten some really good reviews. I'm pretty sure people are biased against it just because Keira Knightley is in it.

Babel was fantastic and well deserving of the award. I highly recommend it to everyone I talk to about it.

Some of the stories were stronger than others. It was just okay. Definitely not like the steaming pile of dog shit that was Crash.
