I dunno if this was already brought up, i'm too lazy to search so im sorry in advance. I know most of us here at RM are big movie buffs and film students so i want your opinion on something. Can a movie be too violent? Violent to the point to were it ruins the movie no more how good the acting or writing is? We have all seen movies with very disturbing scenes in them, some so bad that we said we couldn't/ wouldn't watch it again despite the fact it was a good film. Did those scenes add or take away from the movie/story?

Hey there, pal. Speak for yourself.

i don't see how people could not be completely desensitized to movie violence by now.

My wife walked out of the theater during the torture scene in Pan's Labyrinth. I think the movie would have benefitted from that scene being shorter/less graphic. I got the point.

I've come to realize one thing about violence. I have 3 kids now under the age of 8 and I could care less if they hear foul language or nudity on TV, I'll change the channel, but it's no big deal, but I really try to keep them away from violence as much as I can. It's just obvious that they are much more disturbed by violence then any of those other things. They just get embarrased by nudity or language. Why this country is so strict about language and nudity is still beyond me.

I think for the most part it's all become rather gratuitous. Like PD said, if you "get the point" then being graphic about it isn't really necessary. I guess that coupled with the fact that the special effects nowadays have gotten so much better really kinda turns me off.

as much as i loved this film, and while i still wouldn't want to change it, it wouldn't have been any less potent if it weren't as graphic

the amount of violence is irrelevant, but the taste in how its shown... watch no country for old men for a lesson on how to show violence... at the beginning it was brutal, with a lot of realistic details to make it effective, but at the end they didn't even show the murders and it had twice the effect like when he checks his shoes at the end
