Miike's films do demand a great deal from the viewer. His style is sometimes overbearing and detracts from the overall story. I found Audition and Gozu to moved unbelievably slow (Miike intended this) and culminated in a shocking finale. I feel the payoff in Audition was worth the investment but didn't like Gozu too much. However, Ichi is one of my favourite movies ever.
Miike is great. What I think many people miss about him is that he's actually pretty moralistic, albiet in an extremely bizarre fashion. His movies are almost never superficial.
