It felt like the director went out of his way to get all creative and 'independent' in the storytelling. Could have been a great story but I just felt disconnected.

That forced creativity is Malick going off of his instinct during filming and editing. The man did the same thing with The Thin Red Line and New World, it's just the way he operates. It's not for everyone.
But I invite everyone to read the script. It is a fantastic collection of stream of conscious prose. It reads more like a novel than a script. Great stuff.

Finally saw this. Malik's movies are weird. I can never tell if I like them but they always elicit such strong emotions. It's like my heart says they are brilliant but my head says they are pretentious drivel.
