I posted this on another board regarding this subject.
There are very few video game series that make for good movies because we already know the end. It's the one complaint I heard about LOTR from people that enjoyed it...we knew, through almost every moment of detail, what was going to happen and/or what would be said. For some movie-goers, that's a buzzkill.
I'd love to see a Halo movie, but I find it hard to believe that they could make a good movie out of it, especially if they unmask Master Chief or focus on the marines and how MC appears to them. There's something about experiencing it in video game form that makes it enjoyable. The biggest reason I'd love to see it is to get an third person perspective of the destruction that one super-soldier causes.
I'd love to see a Metroid movie, but for the same reason that I feel that Halo would fail, Metroid would fail. The main characters are supposed to be faceless, speechless. What you'd have is CGI-fests and I just don't think that most audiences would buy into that...or at least the movie studios would think so. It would be really hard to find an actor who'd be willing to be in a suit the whole time, with no face time, and few, if any, lines. It goes against what they are. It'd be awesome to see, but gaming fans don't make up a respectable percentage of the movie going population to attempt it. It's too risky for most studios to greenlight.
What's sad is I'm sure that a new Mario, Zelda, or Metroid movie would look really great and, with the right story, could make for a compelling media based movie. I just don't think we will ever see it made.

I'm pretty sure I saw this movie preview a few months ago and it really just seems like a bunch of nerds with a video camera and nothing serious. I love everything that is Zelda, but a Zelda movie would suck regardless of the story...
