Who else is getting up early with me to watch the Nobel announcement tomorrow? 7:00AM Eastern!

Murakami looks like the favorite, although there's been rumblings about Peter Nadas (at least in the betting world). I haven't read either, so I can't really comment.

And the Nobel goes to...Mo Yan! A Chinese realist, he's got about ten or so books translated into English, if you're interested: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_ ... 69be4db296

Never read him, don't know much about him. First Chinese author ever to win the prize.

My guess is the Nobels are trying to appease the Chinese after the peace prize thing.

Two years ago, the winner of the peace prize was a Chinese dissident. The Chinese government was piiiiiiiiissed.

I'm reading Lansings Endurance. The retelling of Shackletons expedition to the Antarctic. It's mind-blowing what they went through and it's really well written. Haven't been able fo put it down.

I usually think memoirs by comediennes are stupid, but I'm laughing pretty hard at this one. Then again, I'm not sure that Jenny Larson is a comedienne.

women aren't funny, yeah?

anyway - I'm reading "Amusing Ourselves to Death" (Neil Postman) - about women comediennes I think...

actually it's about the sociological effects of technology on the country, but was written in the 80s and the technology was mostly television - still some valid commentary applicable today.

You're right. That was a sexist statement. Does it help if I also dislike books by Bill Maher, Penn Jillette, George Carlin, Lewis Black, and John Hodgman?

Basically, I think stand-up, sketch, or sitcom writing translates poorly in books. Often, it translates poorly in stand-up, sketches, and sitcoms.
