I'm about to finish On the Road. I really enjoy it so far and I'm going to continue my Kerouac-reading. Any input/suggestion from you guys of what to read after On the Road is much appreciated (there's quite a lot to choose from), thank's.

dharma bums was the second novel i read by kerouac. its kind of the perfect segway (sp?) into the more obscure, detailed writings like visions of cody, subterraneans and big sur.

I thought Buddha was the hero of the novel
But definately read Dharma Bums. I like it better than On the Road.

i really liked desolation angels, too. i read both the dharma bums and desolation angels at the same time, which is pretty fun if you can handle it.
i was planning to make desolation angels my next kerouac read, actually. my favourite is probably the subterraneans but i figure the dharma bums is the logical progression from on the road.

Just in case anyone's interested, I saw this posted somewhere else:
Beat writer Kerouac recorded a fair bit of material and one of the most important was the long-lost recording session of him reading a part of his most famous work. Long searched for, and long thought destroyed, it was finally discovered in the Kerouac archives. In addition to his reading of On The Road, he also cut acetates singing jazz standards and reading some of his poetry, "Orizaba 210 Blues" from Book Of Blues and the previously unpublished "Washington D.C. Blues" with original music composed by David Amram:

which is the one where he goes and live son the mountain for months as a ranger or fire warden? that was my favourite for a long time...jeez its been years since i read his stuff...

I'm not sure if it's in the reading's listed above, But Dharma Bums is his journal to the mountain and Desolation Angels (the first half anyways) is his time on it.

reading big sur right now. is this okay to do without having gone throught he entire duluoz legend from start to finish? big sur is kinda the end of the road, so to speak. oh well. his poor cat, tyke. fucking a.

yes it is..all of his books can be read independently without a through line...
gods..he was hardly together enough to maintain a througb line..the editors had to fight to keep the names sticking to the correct people..that among other things..
Big Sur is a beautiful one..go for it.
