I see a lot of threads about a lot of films on this board, and there are some damn picky people here. Besides Dark Knight, I can't remember a movie that people haven't picked to pieces in a long time, and even Dark Knight had criticism from the poeple we all knew would criticize it.

Please exclude foriegn films in this list, and try to list at least five films of any genre that you would consider masterpieces.

1. Goodfellas
2. Dark Knight
3. Memento
4. Eternal Sunshine
5. Pulp Fiction

There are many others that I could list, and these are in no particular order.

What makes it an American Masterpiece? Dark Knight, Memento, Eternal Sunshine were all written (for the majority) by foreigners and all directed by foreigners as well.......I'd also argue that most stars of those films were foreigners too. Not nitpicking, just wondering why those 3 would be considered American Masterpieces?

Because it's my thread. :D Seriously though, I have a feeling people will mention a bunch of films that most of us haven't heard of. If it was a foriegn film, but still popular over here, then by all means mention it.

Errrr...

Dark Knight was directed by an Englishman, and starred an Australian and another two Englishmen...

In what way is this an American movie?

(actually I just remembered that Christian Bale is Welsh, not English)

So basically...masterpieces that you've heard of?

No, not really, but I just knew that it would be 99.9% foriegn films from people like you if I didn't make a distinction. Who would think of Dark Knight as a foriegn film anyway.

I didn't mean anything bad when I said people like you either. I just mean film school types. You guys are actually the ones I really wanted to hear from. If you don't think there are any films besides foriegn films that qualify as masterpieces within the last 20 years, then just don't post any.

what qualifies a masterpiece then? i don't think any of the films you listed would be "masterpieces" in my eyes, with eternal sunshine and PF being the exceptions, maybe.

I know I'll get flak for it, but I'd say either Toy Story or Wall-E. Great movies.

I don't think I mentioned anywhere that you have to agree with my choices. List your own, or don't.

Why would you qualify it as an American film?

Not sure if these qualify, or are laughable here, but I like em. Masterpieces? Eh, prolly not.

Braveheart
The Departed
Usual Suspects (may miss the 20 year mark?)
Kill Bill 1 & 2
Saving Private Ryan
