Is there really no thread on this?

Surprisingly funny, and Christian Bale will win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Might see this tonight. But I cannot stand Mark Wahlberg. Especially the trailer, all he does is whine.

I hope Bale wins, though, if he is that good. After the Terminator Salvation fallout (which was blown out of proportion), I hope he closes it with this.

But I still like Renner in The Town

Renner was also good. I think I might have to watch that one again. I remember him being good but didn't really stick out at the time.

I was a little uncertain at first...the whole 'Mark Wahlberg is some nobody who becomes a sports hero' thing makes it sound like a sequel or something....but now I wanna see it.

My wife won't see this, mainly because of her PTHSD. It is a daily struggle.

I felt the same way , but i really enjoyed this one.
When i saw the preview i told myself no way i'm wasting my time with another overblown boxing movie, but I finally caved in and I'm glad I did.
Bale is on fire. Give him the award he was so damn good in this.

I really got caught up in the movie and rooting for Mickey.

Good stuff.

Edit- sorry i misread it was hard for me to get excited about another boxing movie in general.

Bale was great... But it has all of the sports drama cliches. Just once I'd like to see a boxing movie where the actual boxing at least somewhat resembles a real boxing match. I suspect they'd be too worried about boring some of the less sophisticated viewers.

My one sentence review is "standard sports drama, except with more swearing and drugs."

I saw this the other night. I'm so happy for Bale. I would be surprised if he didn't already have Best Supporting locked up. He was fantastic.

I've seen a lot of the big movies that are in talk for awards this year, and I know that that is not even close to a comprehensive view of the best current movies, and I don't think that I'm going to like any movie as much as I did this one. Every single character in the movie is fascinating. You love every one of them, even when they're fighting each other. Highly recommended to all.

I just re-visited the trailer and thought about the basics of the story a little bit, and I realized that this is the type of movie that is somehow able to elevate itself above the sort of basic underdog story that it tells. It doesn't do anything amazing that no movie has ever done before, it doesn't even really tell this story in a way that hasn't been done before. But somehow it all works perfectly. There is no need to excuse any faults in the story, because the movie is so good that any fault you might think there would be if you were to separate yourself a bit and go through the movie point by point, doesn't exist when you're watching the movie. Those faults don't exist. The sum of the parts is greater than the whole, maybe. It's perfectly executed/directed. I don't know. It's a really great movie. I wanted to recommend it again, especially to those people who are underwhelmed by the trailer. It's not an especially great trailer.

Finally got to see this tonight. Great performances all around. Bale deserved the nod. Not once did I think Batman.

And the sisters....sweet moses they were funny.
