I really can't help but wonder if this isn't even just a little bit in response to the fact that last year two vastly popular films both with audiences ($) and with critics did not get Picture noms, I speak of course of THE DARK KNIGHT and WALL-E.

Keith Olbermann made a good point about this last night, that with the economy in the shitter, there will now be twice as many movies that can market themselves as "Best Picture Nominee".

This was the first thing that came to mind for me. All of the Oscar nominations ended up being movies that came out right before all the nominations are selected. Movies that came out earlier in the year but were widely viewed/liked got squat.
