Why don't we have a thread for this movie/book yet? Seems ripe for discussion, unless I'm just overlooking the old thread. Completely underrated movie, and the book was treated just as unfairly in it's time, yet this thing lives on.

Overrated crapfest.

I think the movie is pretty damn good. Christian Bale nails the character, and every time he gives his thoughts on Phil Collins or Huey Lewis is just so creepy. I need to read the book.

This movie is what made me really like Christian Bale. I liked it and i also want to read the book.

Absolutely awesome. I love the book also. The only problem with the book is it makes the movie look so tame. I recommend both of course.

Does anyone else really love the business card scene? So much tension over a little piece of paper.

I've seen the movie several times (just picked up the dvd this weekend actually) and read the book a long time ago. I think the book makes it's point a lot better in certain areas than the movie, but it's often a lot less enjoyable in how it does it. The film makers really did a good job in bringing out the humor of the novel. On the other hand, they certainly toned down the violence as well, though to be fair, you couldn't do the stuff he does in the book on-screen, unless you were going for an X rating.

The book is really, really good (albeit very disturbing). Ellis does a great job of allowing the reader to get inside the head of Batemen with his very unique writing style.

Sometimes it can be very tedious, whole chapters dedicated to the new Huey Lewis album and whatnot. But it just makes you feel how maddening it is to deal with Batemen's own thought processess.

That's what I'm saying. While it certainly makes it's point, sometimes it's done at the expense of your enjoyment of the novel. The thing that really got me about the book wasn't the music critiques, which I actually found to be quite funny, but rather that every fucking time they were in a restaurant he would spend two pages describing the menu, the clothes and designers everyone was wearing, etc. I get the point of why he did that, but it was such a drag after the first few times that it drove me nuts.

It's my favorite scene in the movie and I think about it every time I exchange cards with someone at a meeting.

Yeah the detail is what I really enjoyed about the book. You get to see just how completely fucking nuts the guy is, his attention to detail is crazy. Good stuff.

Anyone see the sequel?

the "Hip to Be Square" scene is sweet... but i think it's actually the song that makes the scene

isnt that 70's show chick the killer or something?... might have caught this late night on hbo

i didn't like it. i think the best comparison i could make would be my reaction to natural born killers...perhaps a well made film, but its ultimate point was so glaringly obvious and dated that i didn't really give a tin shit about the rest of the film.
