Just borrowed the DVDs off a mate, and I'm nearly done with the first season. Not quite as good as The Office, but Gervais and Merchant have come up with yet another excellent concept, and executed it brilliantly. These guys know how to weave social observation with situational comedy, and do it seamlessly.
By the way, "Tea for the Tillerman" is such a perfect choice for the closing credits.

i can't imagine this thread will generate much response. i don't know why people here don't love gervais. i'd say along with larry david, he is the most comedically gifted man on the planet. anyway, i just watched the first season again. it is even better than i remember. i wish they would release the dvd in the u.s. season 2 has started in the u.k. according to gervais's webpage, ian mckellan, chris martin, orlando bloom, daniel radcliff(harry potter) are all set to do cameos. it should be on hbo soon.
tea for the tillerman is the greatest song choice since handbags and gladrags for the office. this show is just as good, imo.
start downloading the ricky gervais show podcasts. they're hilarious.

Hey I don't care if no one else responds... we can have a yarn about Extras all by ourselves.
Totally, totally agree about "Tea for the Tillerman" being the best choice for closing credits since "Handbags & Gladrags". Their song selections for the Office Christmas specials was incredible as well.
They don't look like they put a lot of thought into what they do (Gervais is so ridiculously goofy and Merchant constantly eggs him on) but they do, and it reveals itself subtly.
I love how despite all the cameos etc. the story really isn't about those stars at all, but about Andy and Maggie. Again, another classic love story. Can't wait to see how they tie it all up. Surely cannot be as poignant as Tim/Dawn?!

loved the first series, anxiously anticipating the second
my only problem with it though is that i sometimes have great trouble watchin the uncomfortable scenes, and god know's there's many of them. i still appreciate them, but my poor soul can barely handle it sometimes.

i'm as atheist as they go, yet i cannot seem to handle the inaproppriateness sometimes. it makes me cringe more than it makes me laugh. and i want to laugh, for fuck's sakes.

the show has the greatest opening scene of a series ever. when the nazis break open the door and he sticks his goofy head in there just as the director yells cut: "oh, for fuck's sake." i showed that episode to a friend and he would randomly laugh at innappropriate times because he was still thinking of that.
the show also has the greatest excuse ever:
"i can't. i'm doing anything else."

I know what you mean... but methinks you missed the reference to the Kate Winslet episode "date".

I don't have HBO, so unfortunately I haven't seen it. I saw a clip on Conan a few weeks ago where David Bowie sang a song about how pathetic Ricky Gervais' character is. I'd love to see it.
