I used to love the first one back in the day, but I never got around to playing the sequels for some reason. I found some good deals on ebay, so I've been working my way through the series. I was surprised at how creepy SH1 still is today. The voice acting is horrible and the plot was kind of weak (although the concept of crashing your car, waking up, and having no idea where your daughter is is certainly scary), but all the subtle nuances and attention to atmosphere are what make the game so good. The graphics are dated, but the game is still very playable by today's standards.

I'm on SH3 right now, and I can tell already that it's going to be the best so far. The graphics are a HUGE jump in anything the series had scene, the voice acting is tight and the fmv's are beautiful. The change in initial location is nice, and there seem to be more weapons and items available. Looking forward to playing through this. I read that SH4 was kind of weak.

Anyone played Homecoming yet? It's not getting particularly strong reviews, but I'll pick it up when the price drops, or when it becomes a greatest his or whatever.

That first time my buddy and I played through SH1 was one of the most intense video game experiences i've ever had. We stayed up all night taking turns playing, not knowing what horrible monsters would be coming with the next air raid siren. Epic fucking game.

After that we played through it dozens of times, getting every easter egg and alternate ending possible. The alien ending was fucking classic  .

I read somewhere that there's a UFO ending in every game. SH2 also has a "dog" ending where you walk into a room and find that a dog has apparently been controlling the game, haha:

Nice. I didn't play the second one with the same zealousness as the first so i didn't bother with any alternate endings. Then i kind of forgot about the franchise and haven't played a game since

i'm a big fan of beating it once, then finding the other endings on YT

yeah, i keep meaning to but i get sucked into all the other crap i've been playing, especially because i really wanna check out homecoming, but not before i finish the other two (and may origins as well). Maybe i'll start it today. I thought 2 was awesome.

Beat 3, working my way through 4 now. Same core gameplay, but much has changed. Not sure if I'm a fan of the whole "room" thing.

i started 3 last night... so are there no CG cutscenes in this one? if so, that's pretty lame. that was always my favorite part of these games.

i just played for about 15 minutes to check it out. cg means like full on animation, rather than cutscenes that are made using the in-game engine. like how all final fantasy games from the psx on have those FMV scenes, versus say metal gear, which is all in game

ok, i thought that's what you meant. yea, as far as i know there's no cg in 3, but there have been some in 4 though.

that's cool...i don't know why, but i've always loved the crap out of those kinds of cutscenes.

the intro in 3 at the amusement park is awesome. i also like how you're not immediately thrown into silent hill.

yeah i liked that too... i had a feeling it was a "i'm gonna wake up soon" deal, but it was cool being thrust into it like that.

homecoming got a lot of mediocre/negative reviews, but from what i understand, fans of the series still enjoy the crap out of it
