Has anyone read this book? Marty Scorsese is planning on filming a film version (which I'm predicting after he makes it will be considered one of his greatest achievements because it sounds like one of his passion projects). I'm planning on picking it up after I finish "blood meridian".
Synopsis:
Two Jesuit priests, Sebastião Rodrigues and Francis Garrpe, travel to seventeenth century Japan under the Shogunate regime (which has isolated itself from all foreign contact) to see how the evangelical mission is going. There they witness the persecution of Japanese Christians at the hands of their own government, which wishes to purge Japan of all western influence. Eventually the priests separate and Rodrigues travels the countryside, wondering why God remains silent while His children suffer.
Day-Lewis & Del Toro in Talks for Scorsese's Silence Source: Variety February 2, 2009
Variety says that Martin Scorsese is determined to make Silence his next movie. The helmer and Graham King's GK Films are negotiating with Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro to star.
Gael Garcia Bernal is also circling the film, expected to begin production later this year in New Zealand.
The drama is set in the 17th century as two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity.
Silence is based on the Shusaku Endo novel, which was adapted by Jay Cocks. There is currently no domestic distributor for the film.
