Independently made, and arguably raised the bar for horror films in general.

TCSM changed me in the respect that it was the first movie the really scared me. I looked up the 'ture story" aspect of it, and found out about Ed Gein. It was the first case of real life pure evil I was interested in. So the movie indroduced me to terror for the first time (I was 13 when I saw it) and opened my eyes to how dark the world can be.

Being a movie freak, I guess it changed things for me in this respect too. What if there was no TCSM? Then no...Hills Have Eyes...The Town That Dreaded Sundown...Jason...???
