I want to see this.
Starring: Gary Hart, George McGovern, Jann Wenner, Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Carter Directed by: Alex Gibney
From Rolling Stone:
Quote:
The good doctor is family around these parts, so cheers to Alex Gibney (Oscar winner for Taxi to the Dark Side) for not screwing up this mesmerizing documentary about the people, places and substances that altered the mind and battered heart of the Kentucky-born inventor of gonzo journalism. Johnny Depp, who paid for the 2005 funeral in which Thompson's ashes were fired out of a cannon, narrates with just the right mix of awe and impertinence. Tom Wolfe, illustrator Ralph Steadman and Rolling Stone editor and publisher Jann S. Wenner check in on navigating the blurred line between fact and fiction that marked Thompson's landmark writing. Family, including son Juan, fill us in on life with the man who declared, "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." The photos, audiotapes and home movies hit hardest because they bring Hunter back. "This won't hurt," he wrote in his suicide note. For those of us who miss the heat of his fear and loathing and the holes he shot into hypocrisy on and off the campaign trail, it hurts plenty.

As far as I can tell, it's just getting a limited release in the US on July 4. It was already premiered at the Sundance Festival I think. I'll probably have to wait for it on DVD.

I put this on reserve and then saw it through netflix a few months back- I've always been a fan of Thompson's, and while I thought there was some good clips on there from when he was younger etc, I think it left me rather depressed knowing how far he fell, emotionally, in his personal life, in his career, I dunno- it was probably more info than I really wanted to know about him.

The movie is a bit average. It takes the incidences he's most famous for and goes into a bit of detail (Kentucky Derby, Hell's Angels, Vegas etc), but basically ignores anything he might've done from the late '70's until his death. I mean, we all know about the things listed above, I guess I was hoping for some detail into the less prolific years.
Overall, the movie doesn't do him justice. I finished 'The Great Shark Hunt' recently, and it's amazing. I'm currently on Volume 1 of his letters (Proud Highway), and have Volume 2 (Fear and Loathing in America) on the coffee table for when I'm done with the Volume 1.
BTW, love that shirt above. Where can it be purchased?

Fear and Loathing in America is a superb book.
Not to hijack the thread, but they had both volumes of his letters side by side in the store. Thought I'd get 'em both and read 'em both in order. So, I'm still on Proud Highway, but I'm really looking forward to ...In America.
I'd love to have a Kurt Vonnegut book of letters like this. I'd say his correspondence would have been fucking hilarious.

i swear i saw kurt vonnegut on an outdoor promenade in denver last summer. i know he's "dead," but fuck man, this guy must have been his cousin or an impersonator or something. i had a mini freak-out and got all hopped up and told my buddies i was going to go talk to him, but then i remembered he was dead.
