PaperBackSwap.com lets you trade books you no longer want for books you do want. Similar to BookMooch, PBS works on a point system: Every time you mail out a book, you earn a credit. Every time you receive a book, a credit is deducted. In other words, you have to send books to get books.
I love this thing. Unlike many other trading services (Zunafish comes to mind), PBS doesn't charge you for each "transaction." The only thing you pay is postage, and the site ingeniously produces a printable mailer that shows the exact Media Mail rate for the book you're sending. Slap on the right number of stamps and drop it in the mailbox—no trip to the post office required.

not to sound like a dick, but isn't this what the library is for? granted your local branch may not have every book you want to read, but they can order it for you or can get it from another branch.

Well, i go to the library too. It's nice to be able to get rid of some of my books and get something in return too. When I lived in a small town, I didn't have a good library at all. I'm doing this for the kids that grew up like me and just want a book. Think globally, PMA.

i went to the library until i rented some ps2 tomb raider game and lost it while moving. turns out they dont want another copy of the game, OR the amount of money the game is worth. they want $200+, and they sent my shit to some collections place rather quickly. so they can go fuck themselves now and in the future. much like i plan to do tonight.

jesus christ. that's pretty serious. I have had $7.38 in late fees for 5 or so books since October, but I have had no problem checking out new ones. I returned the books though, that could be why. Still, no one has yet to make me pay a fine.

im obviously not a big fan right now. im going to try talking to someone higher on the totem pole than the local branch book wranglers. see if they can make something happen.

you need to use your internet connection to solve this problem via e-mail. Or hacking.

Just joined!
Once you join you get an instant credit (good for one book). When you post your first ten books, you get another credit. Each book you mail to someone, you get a credit. Within an hour of joining I've received requests for two of my books (The Moviegoer-Walker Percy, and a Lester Bangs anthology). I requested a William Gibson book, but that request is still pending. We'll see when I get it and if this is all worth the $2.23 postage per book.

getting The Plot Against America by Philip Roth mailed too.
Now I have requests for five of my paperbacks (Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Barrel Fever, Fear and Loathing, Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs, and The Doors of Perception) .
RM users should join this site, I think most of you would have better books to offer than what I'm mostly seeing, which are mass market paperback thrillers and mysteries. We could all be on each other's buddy lists and swap exclusively. IT would be a virtual RM book swap club.

I am going to post all of my old books from school that I don't want anymore, and my girlfriend and I are going to post books that we each have a copy of. Most of them will be novels, books of poetry, etc.

Was it the Bel Air branch? I had a 90 dollar fine and talked them down to 25. But then again I'm something of a smooth operator.

The exact opposite thing happened to me. I accidentally sent a copy of Falling Down back to Netflix that belonged to my bro's college library, and they got a used copy off Amazon for 4 bucks and didn't even charge us for it.
