Well the first 2009 special, "Planet of the Dead", has aired (at least in the UK). Thoughts?

(obligatory place for non-UK residents to realise they haven't watched it and decide to exit the thread sharpish)

Personally, I thought it was... well... OK. Nothing too exciting, but definitely not as family friendly as the The Next Doctor. Certainly nowhere near as epic as the final episodes of season 4. I prefer my Who to be scary!

However,

Spoiler: show
Oh, to have a Cassandraesque character. Lazy screenwriting 101 it may be, but it's still pretty cool. "Your song will end soon, Doctor", echoing the Ood from season 4. 2 other points of geekdom:

Our Resident Seer said "he will knock four times" - hmm I wonder what other Dr. Who character is associated with four-beat drumming? FAP!

Also, the next time advert featured the Tardis cloister bell sounding in the in the background - a general sign of approaching regeneration. They had better make Ten's regen epic!

yeah I agree.
It was ok but not great, could have been a lot more scary (the Satan Pit I think is still by far the scariest) and it smelled too much of Pitch Black.
I found having Lee Evans, playing his usual persona, actually distracting, though I'm looking forward to Lindsay Duncan in the next one.

But they better send off DT very well.. I hope for some incarnation of the Master (surely they've exhausted the Daleks and Cybermen by now).
Now I do like the new doctor Matt Smith (seen him on stage 3 times and he's very good), but I'll miss Tennant though I think it's right for him to leave now before he gets typecast in he part (hopefully for more stage work :))

Heh, I love that 2 parter. How they got that past the censors I'll never know! I'd say the truly excellent Blink is the scariest though. Stephen Moffat has a lot to live up to!

In fact, I'd say Moffat produces the scariest Who episodes. I'm thinking Blink, The Empty Child and last year's Libary double bill. Although Midnight was fucking creepy too - brrr!

Absolutely. I loved her character in Rome. And it looks scary as shit!

Spoiler: show
According to my rather geeky sources, the "knock four times" reference is not about who most people would think it is, according to Tennant. So, perhaps no Master then? Hmm...

I'd forgotten about Blink, creepy indeed.
Fear Her is another creepy one.
But it seems the double bill ones are the best, they have more time to develop the story and wrap it up properly.
They should more short arc ones instead of the episodic with season long background arc (that generally turns out pretty meh)

Hmm... although I'm excited there's one thing that's giving me pause - Russell T Davies' ability to fluff a dramatic finale. We've had deus ex machinas (The Parting of the Ways) cheesy reset buttons (Doomsday and The Last of the Time Lords) and implausible resolutions (Journey's End). I mean, these episodes aren't exactly bad, but they're like the episodic equivalent of a Big Mac - good at the time but with a queasy aftertaste.

indeed!
love Lindsay Duncan, she's bad ass!
now that'd be interesting if she's there for the new Doctor... Matt Smith and her played mother and son in a very good small play a couple of years ago, so they know each other pretty well.

Okay there were multiple DW threads I saw that I could've topped, and I chose this even though my post isn't specifically about the 09 specials. I only just started with the Davies/Moffat new version a couple months ago, I'm a little more than halfway thru series 3.

But tonight I finally saw "Blink" (one of my friends who's a hardcore fan has been telling me for awhile that I'd go nuts for this episode) and I do have to say it's one of the best pieces of scifi filmmaking & storytelling I've ever seen. Probably the single best DW episode I've seen thus far. And ya know usually when you're using time travel heavily in the telling of your story, it's almost impossible to do so without creating significant plotholes, but as best I can tell with this, they covered their tracks pretty well.

I'm really not a Dr Who fan at all. So you can imagine my surprise and delight when the missus informed me that we ARE going (and I have absolutely zero choice in the matter) to see this http://www.doctorwholive.com/.

May god have mercy on my soul.
