i'm surprised with the number of women on this board that it hasn't been talked about already (and no, i don't consider myself feminine for reading it), i absolutely LOVE dogs. i mean i really, really like dogs. they are such great companions with undying love and devotion to their owners. plus they are protective of the people that they care about. so who else has read Marley and Me?
it's the true story a very loving and caring labrador retriever who is also high strung, destructive and has endless energy. i had a dog like this (although a black lab) who never really lost his energy until about the last year of his life. about once a month he would chew something out of nowhere (like table legs, window sills, and the like) but he otherwise was a good dog. enough about my dog though, this is a great story and it helped me relive my own life with "dakota", although i'm not a newly married couple(john and jenny) trying to have children and start their lives together.
(i'm putting this behind a spoiler because it's pretty long)
when the two people brought marley home for the first time he was almost uncontrollable, running into things and knocking lamps over, seemingly without a care in the world. i want to say a few months after they got him jenny gets pregnant. well when they go to have their first sonogram, for whatever reason, they find out that their fetus has died. it's still attached though and jenny has to go through the process of suctioning it out as if she had had an abortion. so needless to say she's a wreck, although she did not cry once throughout the whole ordeal. they get home and jenny goes inside and just sits in the living room in a complete daze. john gets marley out of the garage and he's his normal playful and rambunctious self. he runs into the living room and his demeanor changes completely...he sees jenny and he walks over slowly, puts his head in her lap and begins to wimper. jenny leans down and pets his back before burying her face in his fur and breaking down crying for the first time that day.
it's a really touching book and i hope the film they are planning on making does it justice. it's going to star owen wilson and jennifer aniston and be directed by "david frankel" (i have no knowledge of his work)
