so if I am not mistaken the director's cut of T4 is only on bluray? and the unrated version of the hangover will only be on bluray? and rumor has it there are several other upcoming movies that the bare bones dvd version will come out and the bluray will either be the director's cut, or special edition.
this sucks!
I will switch to bluray, becaue I am a total geek, and NEED the special editions, but what about the people who can't afford to switch?
this doesn't seem right. why not put out a dvd version? they are losing money, dvd is in 90% of homes, and blu in what? 17% I think I read.

i like that Pixar and Disney are releasing their Blu-rays with a DVD and a digital copy. I wish more studios would do that - and they don't seem to be more expensive than any other new BR release. We have a blu ray player, but we also have a DVD player in another room so it's nice to have that portability if you want to watch the movie in a different location.
But releasing blu ray-only special editions? that just smacks of studios trying to get the hardcore fans to make the switch over to blu ray so they can charge an extra $10 per release. That would be step 1 of the plan to phase out DVDs i would imagine. I'd expect to see more of this in the next few years.

Well on one hand it seems like it would kinda make sense that a more loaded special edition would only come on BR if for no other reason than because of the larger amount of data storage capacity because of the technology itself... but at the same time, it's not as if there's never been a "special edition" of this or that title on regular DVD.
And the being able to afford switching, I think that argument is holding less and less water everyday. Even good brand name BR players I'm seeing for as little as right around $100 and it seems like a ton of titles are more or less the same price as their DVD counterparts, with a disparity in many instances of no more than $5.
One of the studios is planning on having one side of a disc be blue ray and the other side standard dvd starting next year. I can't remember which studio, or where I heard that but I did.

I have not yet purchased a blu ray player... and im not sure i will. About a year and a half ago i stopped buying dvds figuring id buy a blu ray player soon, and didnt want to rebuy things. You guys realize how much absolute shit we all probably own on DVD? I look at my rack and see easily 1k+ worth of movies.
and since then, i have realized i dont miss it at all. I have a rack filled with movies i never bother to put in.. and as on demand becomes easier and easier to use, along with netflix streaming and other things... Im beginning to wonder if mid term (like within 3-5 years) discs regardless of resolution are going to become entirely obsolete. This doesnt mean im not going to get a bluray, but its just something i have started to think about.

Blu-Ray is fast becoming affordable
you can find a player for 150 bucks (Sony i think) at wal-mart, some higher end samsungs and sony's were on sale for 150 last week for black friday weekend. Thats not bad
then you have blu-ray disc themselves becoming more affordable at 20 bucks a pop upon release (i bought both Star Trek and Terminator: Salvation at these prices on release day), compared to the 30 dollar price tag upon release of not so long ago.
point is...its getting easier to upgrade to blu-ray, hell they even lowered the price of ps3s recently
