i was pretty excited about this show, but the first couple of episodes seemed more like Walker, Texas Ranger than Deadwood. should i give it another chance?

Dude, definitely worth giving it more time. First season was really good overall but the second season has been pretty outstanding so far, imho.

Contrary to the others here, I think season 2 has been underwhelming.
Season 1 was a lot more interesting to me. Better characters, better writing, plus the dopey lovey dovey stuff with Winona has sucked up a lot more episode time in season 2 than it probably should have. I also liked the Crowder family's stories better than the Bennett's.
But, still a good show and glad there's another season lined up.

Watched all of S2 last week and wow. I marvel at their ability to tell such a great story in as few episodes as they do. I wish more shows would do it, it would really cut down on the fat out there.
I was worried at one point that Tim was going to lose it and be written off the show but I'm glad that was just a little thread, nothing more. The interplay between him and Raylan when he was following him was great.

season 2 was better. there was one awful episode though - that shit where winona took the money and raylan tried to help her sneak it back in. that was shitty tv. it wasn't in keeping at all with his bad ass, cool as a cucumber character.
I'm finally all caught up on season 3. Wow. My favorite season so far. I love the new characters and glad they steered away from some of the campy story lines with Raylan & Winona, etc. Hope the writing stays strong the rest of the way...
