Cos Frank seems to have gone out of action and I'm a nut for this movie and can't fathom why it hasn't been picked, I'm taking over!

When I used to think of what made a good movie, I would look at a movie from all aspects: direction, cinematography, editing, acting, story etc. The sum of all these parts make up the whole, and are also what lead me to my opinion of a film...
Then came Lost in Translation. The first time I watched this movie, I felt a strange sense of depression that lasted for a few days, but I couldn't put my finger on why. I watched it again and again, and felt the same way each time. I thought maybe it was because I have never traveled and would really like to, or that I have the desire to find the perfect woman in a strangle world.
Whatever the case, I realized one thing. LOST IN TRANSLATION MADE ME THINK. It made me question my life, its purpose, whether I was happy or not, and what I want do with it. Never has a movie touched me in such a way, and for that reason, this is the best movie I have ever seen. That doesn't mean its the best movie ever made, in fact, I can name many that are technically better than this film, like the one I named before. But I cannot name a movie that has had more effect on me than Lost in Translation, and that is why I love it and will love it forever.
Think of the last movie that really made you think, one that had such a great influence on you that it somehow changed your life, even for the littlest bit. That, to you, is a great movie...
As far as I'm concerned, this is just THE flawless film. When I first saw this, I'd only just stepped off the plane just a couple of days before, after my first solo trip. It was the 2003 PJ tour of Japan, and I came back from Tokyo's Narita airport. I related to something in every single scene in a big way. Pulling into Tokyo city, bewildered by all the flashy lights. Amongst all this bewilderment I could find solace in the one thing I knew- PJ, and other touring nutjobs. Leaving the place, with some piece of music blasting out as I phased away from this vastly different world.
It felt like someone carried a camera, following me around, and adapting all of it. This sense of connection. This sense of being lost, of meandering around aimlessly, stuck. Of the quieter moments when things just were. Of getting drawn back to the familiar when the strangeness of it all just got too overwhelming. Of a most difficult farewell, not knowing if I'd see these people again. The subtlety in the acting was superb. For the first 10 times I saw this, I didn't really feel like they were acting. Then again, I didn't really see it as a conventional film, either.
And then there's the ending. No words can do it justice. Sofia Coppola knew it, too.
There's quite a few movies that I could get into big arguments about why they're masterpieces/shithouse. This one transcends everything else. I'm not going to argue about whether my life experiences and feelings during these most exhilarating times are superior or inferior to others. To me, this is not a film. It's my personal diary on screen.

I could have written that. I saw it when it came out in a small theatre in the city I was studying in. I went there on my own, thought it was the greatest film ever and spent the entire night thinking about my life, what I had done with it and what I'd do with it (and thinking about Scarlett).

i watched this 4 years ago and at the time i had no idea who Scarlett Johansson was and knew Bill Murray only from Ghostbusters. I've been a fan of both ever since, in fact Bill Murray is probably in my top 5 favorite actors. Funny thing is that though i remember loving it, i don't remember the movie itself at all. But i downloaded it last week and one of these days i'll re-watch it.

For me this movie was a bright spot at a dark moment in my life. Besides the fact that I have always loved the beauty of Japan. This movie has a love or hate fanbase. Those who hate it. I can understand there hate for it. But for those who love it. It is simply a movie about familarity in a unfamilar situation. And finding someone who makes u feel better about yourself and find a bright spot in life. I was blown away when I saw it and it made me realize that I wasn't alone in the world on how I felt at the time.

i saw something on youtube where someone played around with the audio and had come up with a pretty good guess at what bill says to scarlett at the end. it was a while ago, i forget what it was.... but im glad, id rather not know.
