Zack Snyder to direct latest 'Superman' film, due in 2012
By Scott Bowles, USA TODAY

Zack Snyder, director of graphic novel adaptations of Watchmen and 300, will take over the Superman franchise, Warner Bros. announced Monday.

The film, written by David Goyer and Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, is scheduled for a holiday 2012 release, the studio says.

Snyder says he was surprised to land the movie, to be produced by Nolan and partner Emma Thomas.

"I had always been a huge fan of the character, but this is out of the blue," says Snyder, who has a long-standing relationship with Warner Bros., which will release his Sucker Punch March 25.

The Superman franchise has been a tricky property for Warner Bros., which has tried before to resuscitate the Man of Steel. The last time the studio went to a comics fan, Bryan Singer's Superman Returns earned $201 million in 2206, about $70 million less than it cost to make.

The first big-screen incarnation, 1978's Superman, starred Christopher Reeve as the superhero. The franchise has averaged $104 million a film and made $518 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo.

Snyder, a professed comic book nerd, knows he's treading on hallowed ground here.

"He's the king daddy, no two ways about it," Snyder says.

The director believes that Clark Kent has been due for a makeover for years, though he's not tipping his hand over the film's star or approach. His bleak interpretation of the 2009 graphic novel Watchmen took in $108 million, well short of its $130 million production budget.

Over the years, Snyder says, other superheroes, "mainly male, have gotten to evolve over the years. Batman. The X-Men. But I think the first (Superman) movies were so well done, he kind of got stuck. I think our challenge is to bring him to a modern audience that's still respectful of the character."

Snyder says Nolan and Thomas came to him with a script "that's really cool. I can't give away anything about it, but I liked it right away."

Whether genre fans will could determine the fate of Krypton's son.

"We're well aware," Snyder says, "that we've opened a big can of worms."

But we have confirmed one thing — the villain of the film will be…

General Zod!

superman II is still my favorite SH movie but not by far. zod, ursula and non totally kicked ass in it, and the performance by zod pushes it to the top in my book

Granted, I'm not sure where/how in the Supes universe this will be, like in the way that Returns sort of acted like a sequel to Supes 2, ignoring 3 & 4.

Although today on Aint It Cool there's an article that was put up that was basically saying according to this one source, there was an indication the plot might revolve around him as Clark going around the world as a traveling journalist trying to decide if he even wants to bother become Superman in the first place.

Samwise, can you just provide a cuteness meter of some sort so that the rest of us can form an informed opinion of all the rumored female leads?

according to cannon (least i think it is, im not that up to date on my supes biography) zod and the others were sentenced to the phantom zone before krypton was destroyed, this alone should make him appear atleast 20 years older than supes, unless they say the zone retards aging

This is true, at least according to the films. The funny thing is I got to thinking yesterday that I'm not sure I'd ever actually watched Superman 1 and 2 in their entirety in one sitting in my whole life, so I DL'd rips of both (the Donner cut for 2) and finished watching tonight.

Another British superhero: Henry Cavill to play Superman
British actor Henry Cavill has been cast as the new Superman.

Cavill, a former public schoolboy, will star in the sixth instalment of the Hollywood franchise.

His casting as the Man of Steel means that America's greatest superheroes are played by a triumvirate of British talent. Andrew Garfield has taken on the role of Spider-Man, while Christian Bale is currently filming his third Batman movie.

It has been a long audition process for Cavill, 27.

In 2004, he screen-tested for the lead in Superman Returns, but the producers chose Brandon Routh. He was also considered for Bale's role in Batman Begins and was considered for James Bond before Daniel Craig landed the part. The near-misses led Empire magazine to dub him "the most unlucky man in Hollywood".

One of five brothers, Cavill attended prep school in his native Jersey before boarding at Stowe School, Bucks, where he appeared in several productions. "As a young boy I appeared in my first play at prep school. Afterwards all the parents came up and said, 'You were great', and it was totally unexpected. I really learned to love the stage," he said.

His most high profile role to date is Charles Brandon in The Tudors, the historical mini-series. He has also modelled for Dunhill.

The new film will be directed by Zack Snyder and released in December 2012 - 34 years after the first Superman film made a star of Christopher Reeve.

Snyder said: "In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognised and revered character of all time, and I am honoured to be a part of his return to the big screen." He described Cavill as "the perfect choice to don the cape and shield."

Sooooo... dimejinky, I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say you're gay? :haha:

Anyways, with Clarke set there's all the rumors coming out about who Lois will be. Apparently the front runner seems to possibly be Jessica Biel... ? Sure she's hot, but that just does not seem like a good choice off the bat. Though not as laughable as Kristen Stewart. Can you seriously imagine somewhat worse for Lois than Stewart? Christ for one thing she still plays on screen as all of about 17. Rachel McAdamns is a popular one, and she already played a very aggressive, plucky sort of reporter in the underrated State Of Play, the movie where Russell Crowe looked eerily like Eddie with the long hair and beard.
