Just saw Elizabethtown tonight and was very pleased. The first half-hour does drag but the movie picks up and pays off greatly. For the Cameron Crowe fans, expect several aspects that seem to always be in a Crowe production (not just the inclusion of an airport). He takes you through a whirlwind of emotion, selects the most perfect music, and involves sets that you swear were straight from your hometown. As for the actors, Orlando Bloom manages to be as bland as ever. But the women in this movie more than make up for Bloom's robot-like performance. Kirsten Dunst blew me away.....equalling Kate Hudson's delivery as Penny Lane. Susan Sarandon should get some attention for Best Supporting Actress come Oscar time. And Judy Greer was great as always. The comparisons of Elizabethtown to Garden State were very pre-mature as there may be a couple similarities but to say one's a carbon copy of the other would be facetious. Like many good movies, this one's been getting ripped by critics, but don't let that deter you. While Elizabethtown doesn't quite live up to Crowe's previous works (Almost Famous or Jerry Maguire), I would probably rank it just in front of Vanilla Sky.

See, I'm a HUGE Cameron Crowe fan, and I'm glad to hear some positive feedback about Elizabethtown. I, too, had heard the comparisons between it and Garden State...good to hear that they're not exactly the same.

It's funny...last night I was talking with a friend about going to see Elizabethtown, because I didn't go see it opening night. So that kind of put me in the Cameron mood. So, I popped in 'Say Anything', which has always been my favoritie Crowe film. I hadn't watched 'Say Anything' from beginning to end in about 3 years. Wow. It was like watching it for the first time. It completely blew me away...again.

I just hope Elizabethtown is half of what Say Anything is, because if that's the case, we're all in for a treat.

A list of Cameron Crowe films:

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Crowe wrote it)
Say Anything
Singles
Jerry Maguire
Almost Famous
Vanilla Sky

Fast Times and Say Anything are landmark films; Fast Times is widely considered to be the best teenage/high school film ever made; Say Anything is widely considered to be one of the best romance films. Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous both won awards (GG and Oscars, I believe). If anything, Singles and Vanilla Sky are his weak films...and if those are your weak films, well, that's still pretty damn good!

And not to mention Pearl Jam's 'Single Video Theory'!!!

Fast Times is always overrated. Not a bad movie, but teen comedies dont do it for me.
Say Anything- strikes me as somewhat dated. Again, not a bad movie, but i dont think its great
Singles- Generic romantic comedy basically.
Jerry Maguire- again, generic romantic comedy.
Almost Famous- I like Almost famous. Probably just cause he got some zeppelin rights.
Vanilla Sky- I only watched a couple minutes and turned it off.

So basically... you just listed a whole bunch of decent movies.. which is right where i have Crowe pegged. Not to mention the lack of versatility. All his movies (sans vanilla sky) have a very similar feel to them.

Give me Curtis Hanson.

If I remember correctly, Vanilla Sky had the misfortune of being released a short time after Lynch's excellent Mulholland Drive if only because many panned it as being derivative.

The really irritating element of Vanilla Sky is the soundtrack. Whereas the songs in Almost Famous blend in perfectly, the songs in Vanilla Sky scream, "I am Cameron Crowe! Look how many different songs I can cram into two hours!"

Looking forward to seeing this one.

And Jesus people, what do you expect, a Cameron Crowe movie to NOT be corny?

It looks too similar to Garden State for my tastes, and Dunst's character looks really, really annoying. And Orlando Bloom as the main character...just doesn't seem that great. I'd have to agree with edzeppe: Crowe just doesn't do very much for me at all.

I did a search and had found that thread already, but it centered mostly on the trailer and some Pearl Jam posters. I just felt better served starting a thread about the quality of the movie itself. But thanks for  that out.

I don't recall seeing anything Pearl Jam but you will see a mention of the Shins, which is funny considering the numerous comparisons to Garden State. Hope you enjoy E-town...if you're a Crowe fan, I'm sure you will.

I saw it last Friday when it opened and I thought it was great. I saw a special on Paula Deen being in it on the Food Network which made me want to see it, so I made a bunch of my freinds go against thier will. How fucking funny was the freebird scene?

It was all right. I liked it, but it was very, VERY flawed. Crowe tried to cram WAY too many songs into it.

Vanilla Sky is way better than a lot of movies, Garden State being one of them.
