this is getting rave reviews here..worth a look(Gleeson also plays Mad Eye Moody in the Harry Potter Series, among other things)

This looks (and is supposed to be) amazing. Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson,
a powerhouse of an actor (In Bruges, Braveheart, harry potter..not huge recommendations but still)

Tribeca Film Festival Review- “The Guard”
04/28/2011 by schuchshabbaz
Movie Review by Matthew Schuchman- Four out of Five ‘Staches.

Open your Netflix account, close your eyes and click around. The chance is high you’ll land on a movie revolving around cops, criminals, drugs and corruption. “The Guard,” the feature length directorial debut of writer John Michael McDonagh definitely fits this bill. But through clever and witty writing, fantastic character portrayals and the smarts to not over complicate the story, “The Guard” is an absolute winner and one of the best films I have personally seen thus far at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.

Brendan Gleeson is masterful as Sergeant Gerry Boyle; Irish Garda officer who doesn’t play by the book. He is crass, confrontational, loves prostitutes, tries anything once and pretty much greets every facet of his life with a nonchalant breeze of; “who cares?” When the film begins, an odd murder has taken place in Boyle’s little hamlet. Part of an international drug trafficking investigation, Wendell Everett, an American FBI agent played to the tee by Don Cheadle also finds his way into Boyle’s life. When the body found in Boyle’s town turns out to be a person of interest in Everett’s investigation, the two are thrust together as the straight laced Everett needs the back talking and care free Boyle.

Right from the get go, “The Guard” separates it self from other films of its kind by lampooning those other films and either pointing out what makes no sense about popular crime dramas or by playing against the grain and doing the opposite of what you expect to see. From freely admitting trying crack to the first words he says in Everett’s presence, “I thought only black boys were drug dealers,” it is amazing that Everett even puts up with Boyle’s shenanigans for one minute.

Brendan Gleeson established long ago that he was a force in the acting world. “The Guard” is another feather in his cap. Obviously no movie could work without a solid main character and Gleeson is the heart and soul of this film. Cheadle’s straight man act is delivered in pitch perfect fashion, but it is Gleeson’s charm, love-ability and essence that really makes the whole act watchable and worth the time. Mark another one off the list of characters that should not be played by anyone else.

Combined with a strong supporting cast of spot on performances from Liam Cunnigham, David Wilmont, Mark Strong, Fionnula Flanagan and Katrina Cas, “The Guard” is entertaining on so many levels. It is engrossing, hilarious, thrilling and well put together. Playing like a modern day western where the big honcho comes to the small town sheriff for help, it keeps itself grounded while playing outside of the box at times. From the wonderful Ennio Moriconne/’Fist Full of Dollars” type theme music to the heroic and intense final shoot out, “The Guard” is an absolute triumph and comes highly recommended from this reviewer.

Rush tickets for the final two screenings of “The Guard” are available for the 29th and 30th of April. Check out “The Guard” festival page for information.

Think this is his best role. He's so good in it.
