i could enjoy this, but i hate romantic movie horses. so this ones a toss up.

As expected it was overly sentimental. But a good show.

I agree. The emotion was totally earned, I felt. Of course, I love animals, and I was in near tears through a good 1/3 of its running time.

I really love that the movie is devoid of cynicism and irony, as it would be because it's told largely from the POV of Joey. I also really dug the narrative choice to have the horse be a vehicle to connect the many "short stories" in the film. About halfway through I found myself amazed that the transitions were all so fluid and emotionally seamless, and how it was good to have that Spielberg back. He's so great at instantly establishing characters and making you care and relate to them in such an efficient yet organic way, through visuals and textbook film craft, not burdensome exposition.

When the horse escapes the tank and makes a run for it through (and over) the trenches, and John Williams' score kicks into high gear, I was completely exhilarated. Of course, it was all set up for the most painful scene in the movie, followed by the most emotionally satisfying. That stretch of the movie was flawless.

I agree with pretty much everything diaglo said. This is a very old-fashioned Hollywood movie in the vein of John Ford/David Lean, and I enjoyed every second of it.
