The individual performances of Leaf and Hoffman are top shelf, the movie itself leaves much to be debated. It seemed to me that there were just pieces missing through out the film. I thought it would be better, but then again I don't think you can compare anything to TWBB.

I suppose it's by good chance, but I was in the middle of reading "Moby Dick" when I saw this. It's definitely a help in finding "meaning" in the story, as the original draft of the script pays homage to the book.

That's ridiculous. One of the best sequences in the movie was the first processing session (or audit session) with Phoenix and Hoffman and the intercutting flashbacks and memories. Such fluid, meditative filmmaking that you of course couldn't duplicate on a stage.
