I'm not really sure of the order here. They made good arguments, but I'm still hanging on w/ Dexter. Of course, I haven't seen Season 6.
1. Scrubs 2. Rosanne 3. Smallville 4. Weeds 5. Big Love 6. The Simpsons 7. Friends 8. Dexter 9. The Office 10. The X-Files

24.
The first few seasons were amazing, but after season 5, it started tanking. Season 6 was pretty horrible, 7 was slightly better, and 8 sucked until the evil president guy came back and had a strong finish.
I disagree with Lost. If the last two seasons had been as good as the first four, nobody would be saying that. Thing is, Lost didn't really run out of narrative gas, it was working toward something. It's just that most people didn't like where it was working towards, including me. But I think 6 seasons is about right for a show like Lost.
Same with Big Love. Yes, it peaked with season 3, but five seasons is about right, and it kind of salvaged itself in the end, after that utterly ridiculous season 4.

Lost was never working toward anything. They always said that, but it was a bullshit claim. It was totally off the rails during the 5th season.

I should've worded that better. They were working towards a specific ending (and I mean, the VERY end) but had no idea how they were going to get there. I just don't think it overstayed its welcome, it was just a completely disappointing final run.

Seasons 5 and 6 of Lost were not as good (pound for pound) as seasons 1 and 2. But the show was awesome right up to the end. It was creative and ended on its own terms. It absolutely did not outstay its welcome. In fact, the creators worked their asses off and ABC was awesome enough to see past their own greed to ensure that that didn't happen.
Friends, The Simpsons, and The X-Files (all three of my favorite all time shows) unfortunately, did overstay their welcome.
