Post subject:  Whedon: The Cabin in the Woods

Quote:
The Cabin In The Woods premiered as the opening night movie at SXSW Film. All I knew going into it was that it was a horror movie by Joss Whedon. I assumed based on the name that some people would go to a creepy cabin in some woods and all get brutally murdered in some sort of suspenseful, creepy way. I tried to imagine what a Whedon horror movie meant. Then I remembered how many other writers have wandered out of their usual fare and made something that seemed completely out of character. I then thought it might be just “Horror Movie (oh, PS, it happens to involve Joss, which should suck in you Whedon lovers)”.

With all of that consideration in mind, combined with the fact that I’m not the biggest horror movie buff, I went anyway just because I wanted to see Joss Whedon in person. I’m a big fan of every single other thing he’s done. And that alone should have reassured me that this wasn’t going to be just any horror movie. And it wasn’t.

If “whedon” was an adjective, The Cabin In The Woods is wholly whedon. It’s whedonly. It’s whedontastic. Whedonriffic. Whedonstravaganza. It is precisely what happens when Joss Whedon makes a horror movie. If you love Whedon with a fake-blood budget that might rival what I spent on my house, then you’re going to love it.

But I have one piece of advice: Don’t watch the trailer.

I strongly feel that The Cabin In The Woods is best seen with no more information than I went into it with. It is a horror movie. By Joss Whedon. Named The Cabin In The Woods. The trailer gives you too much more than that.

Long-time Whedon fans will be happy to see Amy Acker, Tom Lenk, and Fran Kranz. It also features Chris Hemsworth (Thor). And Whedon doesn’t get all the credit—it’s co-written by Drew Goddard, who also wrote Cloverfield.

If you’re still reading hoping for more details, I’ll add that Whedon introduced the movie by asking the audience to tell their friends to see it—but not to tell them the details. It’s best enjoyed spoiler-free. Listen to Joss. Just see it. Listen to me. Don’t even watch the trailer.

I sure hope there are some "whedonly" effects going on, because I don't know how anything new can come out of the isolated cabin horror sub genre.

i just read a review (as much as they could without giving spoilers) saying this movie is incredibly smart and fun.

doesn't sound like your typical back woods/cabin horror film.

ok, so i read the script. or i read a description by someone who did. i really have no reason for doing this once in awhile.

this movie is not like anything i could have imagined. should be a good Netflix stream for sure.

I read a few reviews stating things like this movie "...will have to be talked about" and, "...is one of the best movies, of any genre, so far in 2012". Based on those reviews, I recomended the movie for my wife and her parents and I after dinner. Her father was curious about it too. My opinion? if you liked "Dusk Till Dawn", then yes, this is for you. If your wife's parent's are involved? Bad idea.

But the gore factor is *laughing unbeleivable*, seriously.

Saw it yesterday, i liked how they handle the horror cliches, giving them a meaning of why those characters make those decisions,,,
The ending was reaaaally weird.

This was a really fun movie. Not scary at all in my opinion. I'm surprised this wasn't a more popular movie. Maybe it should have come out closer to Halloween, but this totally deserved more acclaim than it got.

This is just such classic Whedon. It's great.

Maybe I just waited too long to see it. But I wasn't that impressed. It had its moments, but the first half was pretty dull.
Spoiler: show
A big red purge button that for some reason ejects all monsters into the middle of the base? Um... why?

I asked that same question after watching the movie, but asking it doesn't really diminish the fun of that scene.
