Well, if you wanna get technical with the trailer's use of the American flag, then pause at 1:37. Opposite Chastain is the reflection of her shadow inside the glass frame, casted over the American flag. By reading a couple reviews and seeing that image, I'm garning that the movie paints a brutal, dark truth about America and its war on terrorism. A truth were not always proud of, but because of necessity, we live with.

Or it could simply be an image K. Bigelow decided to go with, but it's the way I interpreted it.

The shot. Meaning that I agree with your analysis, I just think the shot is kind of heavy-handed.

I'll have to wait and reserve judgement until I see the shot(s) in context. It may be heavy-handed. Maybe not. Trailers are weird sometimes. It might be perfect in the context of the film, though.
