I'm not any kind of Lucas/Spielberg/Star Wars expert. But I thought Lucas was always asking Spielberg to direct a Star Wars sequel, but he kept turning it down.
Maybe that's just all telephone game.
I actually think Spielberg would be a really good choice. He has the right aesthetic. But I think it's cool that his friendship keeps him from touching it. He has nothing to gain really, and a lot to lose.

I love Spielbergs stuff for the most part. Syrupy saccharine morals being bashed over my head I don't need from star wars. He's past his best. Star wars needs new blood.

Tarantino would be all kinds of wrong. Why would they even ask him in the first place?
Maybe I have this all wrong, but didn't Spielberg keep asking Lucas for one Star Wars movie to direct and George never gave him the chance? Or was it Lucas that kept asking Spielberg for an Indy movie to direct?
Those that think so, why would Spielberg be a bad choice? I think Star Wars would be right up his alley.
Mostly, I think he is too old and too close to Lucas at this point. It's time for a new generation. I would also worry about how he would handle the "cheesy" qualities that come with the SW universe. He does tend to direct with a heavy hand.

Your point about SW needing new blood is probably right. But about the syrupy saccharine morals, did Star Wars ever really deviate far from that? It's family entertainment of the safest order.

Nah star wars was never 'all the family go aaahhhhh' cheesy. Lukes reveal to Leia that she's his sister was the nearest moment and it didn't go there. Padme giving birth and naming the twins wasn't that it was just bad cheese. Spielberg does the former by the truckload and the latter not that much.

He's more "fast-paced action" guy, light on storytelling and heavy on nostalgia. Star Wars is at its best when it creates a great story....a scenario which, if this is indeed based on a George Lucas treatment, may already be impossible to hope for.

I don't know man, Hearing that the guy who did Toy Story 3 is involved is pretty encouraging. Not many movies have done a better job in taking beloved and well known characters in a story that wonderfully straddles the balance between kid friendly, but adult watchable. More impressive is the fact it was done a full decade later

This whole thing has me feeling good about SW again. So good that I dug out my box of SW collectibles from the garage and dumped most of its contents into my son's toy box. All of it prequel-free.

Most people get a lot more out of these films than I ever have, though I do enjoy the original trilogy. The Empire Strikes Back, especially, is a brilliant sci-fi film; probably one of the best I've ever seen (by which I mean top 10).
The Special Editions, and later the prequels, never did much for me.
Am I excited about new films? I suppose. But I wish we could just start over.
I don't think the original trilogy (episodes IV-VI) should be remade. Ever. Leave them alone. Don't reboot the Luke Skywalker story. There would be no point, nothing to gain. It would be too easy/lazy.
Someday, they could probably remake Episodes I-III and I wouldn't cry about it. In fact, as I watched Phantom Menace in the theater I secretly hoped that one day some brave filmmaker (if not myself) WOULD remake the movie.
Surely, I'm in the minority, but I'm done with Luke and Leia. Do we really need to know anything more those characters? Can their images ever be replaced in our minds? Do we want to see 70 year old Han (think about Crystal Skull and nuclear fridges before you answer)? And if we're bringing back all those guys, are we bringing back Obi-Wan and yoda too? Who plays Obi-Wan? CGI Alec Guinnes? Ewan McGregor? Someone new?
3PO and R2 can stay - should stay. Let's let them take us down a new road. They can continue to be our eyes and ears, our familiar narrators. But I'm just not interested in watching Disney & Co wrestle all the old ideas/cast members into a glossy new package. I don't want recycled, cutting room floor, Marlon Brando in my brand new Superman movie, ya know?
Disney has an opportunity to keep the magic (whatever magic is left) of the original trilogy in tact, while expanding the universe in a billion directions for a brand new generation. Instead of "sequels," instead of episode VII, I'd like to see a new adventure in the same universe. I'd like to see Star Wars: The Next Generation (if you will).
Star Trek got it right. And, in my opinion, improved their product/brand by launching a new franchise based on the mythology, the storytelling, the imagination of the original. I'd like to see Disney take this thing and run with it. Leave Han and Luke and Leia alone.

The Star Trek reboot was brilliant and while it was an untold story on screen, it defaced canon completely and caused outrage for doing so, and didn't really being in all that many new fans as a result. If anything I can see Disney being far safer than this. They won't mess with established storylines at all, Lucas probably had a caveat about that in the contract, bit the opposite. They'll probably mine a lot of established characters and have them reappear. No bad thing if it's handled really really well and isn't cheesy.
