LOS ANGELES – Disney is paying $4.05 billion to buy Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind "Star Wars," from its chairman and founder, George Lucas. It's also making a seventh movie in the "Star Wars" series.

The Walt Disney Co. announced the agreement to make the purchase in cash and stock Tuesday. Disney added that "Star Wars Episode 7" is scheduled for release in 2015.

The deal brings Lucasfilm under the Disney banner with other brands including Pixar, Marvel, ESPN and ABC.

Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become its president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Lucas will be creative consultant on new "Star Wars" films.

Lucas said in a statement, "It's now time for me to pass `Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers."

apparently it's going to be another 3 films. Ep. 7 in 2015 then 8 and 9 every couple of years after. I wonder what will be this trilogy's Ewoks or Jar-jar.

I think this is a good thing for the most part. Sure, it has potential to be a disaster, and I could say I have a bad feeling about this, but I really don't. I mean, the new movies couldn't be any worse than the prequels right?

I think SW can be redeemed with 3 good to great movies. I just wonder how they are going to do this...I mean, per Lucas 1-6 are about the rise, fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. What are 7, 8, and 9 going to be based on?

Also, the idea of other movies is interesting. Like a prequel to the prequels. The times of the Old Republic and shit. Hell, maybe they can just redo Episodes 1, 2, and 3 and make them worth a crap. Then re-re-re-release the original trilogy and basically make it original again and take out all the junk from the late 90's re-release.

It's hyperbolic but I'd bet they would recoup most of their 4.05billion if they released the OG trilogy cleaned up with no added effects work.

I don't really agree with that. Disney owns Pixar, and all Pixar movies were better than Episodes 1 through 3.

i just hope they can keep intact the artistic integrity of the prequels and don't lower the brand by plastering the Star Wars name on every piece of cheap merchandising imaginable. oh wait thats been Star Wars for decades.

i dont know why nerds are in such an uproar.

^Exactly. It couldn't get much worse then the prequels, the extended muppet scene at Jaba's palace in Return of the Jedi, or Han shooting first.

I imagine plenty of "A" list directors will be battling for a chance to take over this franchise if Lucas isn't involved.

I'm excited at the prospect of new star wars bit nervous about Disney making a balls of it. Will they pitch it to kids or try revamp it and make it cool again for all to enjoy? They couldn't really fuck it up any worse than Lucas did could they?

I don't know anything about the SW books or associated fiction bit where can they go with this? Far into the future when the jedi have been reestablished and face a new threat?

And what does this mean for the SW tv show which was to be made with all those great writers from BSG etc? Was that ever happening? Is it still gonna?

So many questions
