it's crappy photographs and sharpies. there's a very brief period of time that a sharpie remains wet upon a matte photograph. i draw on the photo and wipe some of it off and blend it into other markered up bits. it's pretty time consuming, but it's fun.

sure. i even took pictures. they're horrible, but they make it easier to understand, i hope.

you'll need to start out with a picture that sort of looks like this.

Image

i like the blurry look that comes through. sometime, i'm going to try doing this over a group of flowers or something and see how it turns out. these are really all throw-away shots from marching band contests and things. the photos are matte, which is important. glossy photos tend to get fingerprint marks, which makes colouring on them more difficult. if you print your own photos on matte paper, you can use those, too, but you'll need to experiment since the texture is different.

then, obviously, you'll need sharpies.

Image

regular markers don't really work well. some of them stay wet, and while that means you can blend them really well and get the amount of depth you'd like, you can't ever frame it. the other markers dry on contact and look really thick on the photo. sometimes, i use those over the sharpies in extra dark areas of the photo.

now we start the fun part. i just randomly pick a colour and a spot. i colour in a bit of the photo in a wobbly shape, like this:

Image

i make sure i go over the area a few times. the more you go over the area, the longer you can take rubbing it off.

Image

take a tissue (the lotion kind work the best because they don't give off as much tissue dust) and rub off the sharpie. rubbing in a straight line back and forth makes it look streaky while rubbing in a circle makes things look soft and blended.

once you do that, you get this:

Image

then, you add another colour:

Image

blend:

Image

once i've got the entire photo covered, i usually go back and layer on more colours. (let's just pretend that i actually covered up the entire photograph.) the layering bit is kind of scary.

Image

it's better to do this in very small bits since it's much harder to cover up mistakes.

blend:

Image

the most important part of the layering bits is that orange and green make brown. it's like playing with paint, only it smells better.

but, yeah. that's my detailed "how to make sharpie art" guide.

I presume the picture in the original post is a composite of 20 4x6s? Of pictures you took yourself?

I'll have to dig through my markers to see if any of them are archival and try this out. Hooray for art techniques.
