This is something I wrote almost 20 years ago while staying on the floor of someone else's apartment because I had no place to live. One night we saw a rat. He came out from under the stove. We named him Orbile (we had just been past the boiler room, lol). I'm not sure who stumbled upon who.

Ok here goes.

Those sleepless nights
Playing with Orbile
People yelling outside the door
Inside, all is silent, less a cough here and there
And Me and Monika whispering in the foreground
A single candle burns
As Orbile darts from point to point
On the kitchen floor
He closes in, stalking his prey
He's getting nearer- He goes for it!
And steals my flower
"I'll squish him", I say
As Monika bursts into laughter
Orbile disappears into the darkness
never to be seen again
For fear of being called
A flower thief.

this is how i see
the way i’ve gone the first half
first attempts to fly
crushed down at the start
crawling was what was left for me

this is how i wish
the way of the second half
finally learn to fly
with a winged heart
in worlds entwined of bird and fish

this is how i go this day
i stumble upon life, just half
way to learning to fly
forth and back to the start
clumsy i go to make my way

Tongue stumbles drunkenly around the words.
Pushing, forcing them out, drawling and slurring
Them together.

Tongue and words caught in my throat,
Broken, choking me.

Still stumbling, tumbling the words 'round my head,
Stuck mumbling to myself, left up on the shelf.

a dance hall day
and there sits the femme
withering away, drink after drink
waste of flesh and bone marrow
i laugh because it's so much that i despise
she could be something more beautiful to my eyes
but there she sits, a waste
i soon find myself walking away and thanking god
it could've been better.
