A lot is self promotion, seeking out opportunities to show your work even in the smallest ways. My local Starbucks rotates "shows" of local folks. Every Fall, Fort Worth Galley Owners Association puts on Gallery night, and because of this A LOT of small mom and pop shops becoe galleries for a day or two. Find your local scene and get to know the folks. If you have a good art store (not Hobby Lobby or Michael's) they'll know a good chunk of info. If you have a pro photo lab (Walmart, CVS, Target do not equal pro labs) talk to them about slide making. If they're cool, they'll tell you what kind of film you need to shoot your own slides.
