I've never really played with spot color. Never really felt the need to. I was reviewing my pictures and came across this. I noticed something in it that I had never noticed before. Now... It's a cheap shot, I know. I'm not real proud of the shots that I got like this, but I still know I took them for a reason.

Now... Just last night I was looking at this one real close, and finally noticed the UNICEF billboard in the back. And it just really struck me. But I had no way of focusing attention on that, while keeping focus on the... "house" as well.

Does this do it? Does this communicate? What do you guys think of this.

Ya'll know what I'm gunning for here.

The problem with doing what you did, is that it looks like a random photo that you decided to photoshop a Unicef logo on. I have no idea that it is in fact a real Unicef billboard. Where is the original logo? behind the blue letters?

The way I understood is the blue part is where the actual logo is.

I can see the word "Humanity" on the left hand side of the billboard, too. Maybe that would be the better part to color - I think it would be less intrusive.

Exactly. Which makes the photo seem like a sarcastic comment of course, no one would think that you actually just tried to emphasize the actual irony or whatever. I don't know. Maybe the other way around it would have been better? The photo coloured and the logo black and white? Hmmm... I don't know.

That thought crossed my mind. Most of the writing on the other side is Amharic (Ethiopian) and the other English stuff is quite small.

I'll do a trial run and see if I can get the other letters colored.

I like the textures and the contrasts in the composition, but I find the blue text a little fuzzy. (Maybe it's my screen?) Perhaps if the text had the same intensity as the surrounding grays and picked up some of the surrounding texture as well, it wouldn't seem as incongruous. Interesting concept and I'd like to see some other takes with different colors and color intensities.

The original.

As you can see, the original color is blue, and in my opinion, must remain blue, as it is the color of the UN and UNICEF.

As I look at it, keeping color in the Amharic writing would be a daunting task and a test of patience like no other.

I thought about keeping the whole billboard in color, but I don't think that would work either.

hmmm... if you want to keep it in b&w, you could only enhance the countours of the logo and the word "humanity" with a shade of darker grey, like a shadow or something. like it was carved on stone, maybe. i don't know.
