So, over the past several months I've been working on a project, taking a 6"x6" picture and blowing it up 10 times.. Basically, I'm taking a single image, chopping it up into a mosaic and post-processing (read: edit in photoshop) people's wishes on them.

The first phase was to collect some wishes (i got 39, more than I expected), and last weekend I finished the second phase of building a prototype. For the prototype, I used my own wishes, since it was only 9 panels, to figure out logistics of cutting the wood, staining it and mounting the pics.

Prototype completed:

The set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/patrick_j/sets/72157594226687575/

Originally, I intended for the larger version to be 144 panels, 7'x5' (yes, feet), but this may not be feasible due to the sheer weight and ginormity (yes, I made up a word) of it. I may shrink it down to 64 or 91 panels...not sure yet. I need to tinker with image splicing and such to see how it would be affected.

The goal was that From afar, you see one big image, but upon getting up close, you see individual wishes, hence, the perceived infinite.

As for the wishes I received, i got quite a range in length and emotion.

If this works out, I have other images I'd like to apply the mosaic concept to.

Anyways, comments welcome.

i like the concept, but the results you posted i don't care for. like for example the font i don't like at all, and you should probably pic objects/landscapes or whatever you take a pic of, that kinda relate to the wish. BUt again, i like the concept.

Thanks for the comments:)

Some more exposition.

I was also using the light, reflected light, as it's a constant (somewhat synonomous with infinite). I'm going for abstract/surreal. I think if it were a literal image, it would detract from the desire of the wish...so you'd focus on the image and not the desire. I left it for the viewer to think up their own mental image.

I think it's an interesting idea.

But, I agree about the picture. As a viewer, I just read the wish as words and no mental picture came to mind. Though, I do get what you were getting at. I do like the idea, and could see it working without literal images.

That's my two cents at least.
