It started with some new equipment I picked up for recording the band. I had a month of it sitting at home before we were going to get to using it. So I started trying to learn the equations by recording some folk covers of pop songs. I liked the way they turned out, so I picked my favorites. The fourth track is the only original on here, although a few of the covers are different enough from their birthrights to feel like mine, when I sing them.

So...nothing. I know they're mostly covers, but I thought I could count on some sort of feedback here.

I had a raspy, sore throat version of Crazy that made it sound like a suicide note, but I couldn't do it without fucking up some of the notes.

very solid, kinda wished you would've tried to reach something similar in the chorus as the orginal, because the song as you play it doesn't seem to have a verse/chorus but one refrain.

Sorry...didn't like it, in your defense though its fucking hard to play a Waits song and make it sound decent. It sounded kinda awkward, but not in a cool Tom Waits kinda way.... I have a recording somewhere of myself doing Innocent when you dream, and i think i might have been drunk but .

I listened to the original and anthems the other day. I thought anthems was boring because it lacked any kind of passion, though in your defense it's a damn tough song to cover. the original, the singing was definatly good though nothing really grabbed me, lyrically or melodywise, but I should mabye give it another listen.

all that being said, its tough to pull of something good with just an acoustic. you have to have something great to make it worthwile, lyrics, vocals or whatever. with a full band you can have so much more going on to get over that. thats how i write anyways, with multiple guitars/keyboards in mind.

It definately approaches the song differently. The lyrics to that track are of such a confessional nature that I wanted to try approaching the song from such a perspective musically. It's more hypnotic and melancholic, and I like that about it.

That was actually the first one I did, just because I wanted to have a version of that song that I could listen to that approached it from such a style. I put it before a Songs: Ohia track on a mix and it works great. But when you're used to such an upbeat, hooky, anthem-sounding song it can feel pretty sparse.



I actually loved the original when I heard it, but only ever spun it twice nearly a year ago, and never since. So this was as free of the influence of that song as a cover can be. I'd been singing it to myself in the car (only remembering about 1/2 the lyrics) quite a bit when I'm stuck in traffic, so I wanted to record it. I went back and rechecked the original, and I like the bounce this version has to it.



As I mentioned, I started this project as a way to learn the new recording equipment I got for recording my band. I just really enjoyed how a lot of stuff turned out, and I thought it was an EP worth of fun. Having said that, a lot of my favorite artists are just solo acoustic people, so I do a lot of guy-and-guitar stuff on the side. I'll probably be throwing a lot of that out here in the far future.
