Or downloadable here.

I demo'd this and another song for the band to choose between as a soft match for Ballad of the Kiss Cover Bands' manic goofiness. We wanted something soft to pair it with. The other song won, and we've done a few takes on that, but in the meantime I went ahead and finished this song up with some help in spite of, as my wife pointed out, a similarity to the soundtrack to a certain gay cowboy movie soundtrack.

I haven't actually seen the film, and haven't heard the soundtrack except in the previews before it came out, so I feel absolved of any wrongdoing. Plus I really like this song.

Lyrics:

We watch fireworks go off
All bright blues and golds
They sparkle and fold

The sky breathes and it smiles
It melts into dusk
It adjusts to us

It's not hard to believe
That the flashes of light we perceive
Are eternities blinking away
Scattered ashes of a beautiful day

Heat keeps flickering off
the sun's lowered eyes
on the Fourth of July

In spite of the sweat
the noisy refrain
it's a beautiful day

Burn marks drift down the streets
Can these moments be all that we need?
Are explosions that blink right away
leaving ashes of a beautiful day?

It's not hard to believe
that the flashes of light we receive
are moments just sinking away
Scattered ashes of a beautiful day

Those lyrics are beautiful. The changes of the "It's not hard to believe..." stanzas are wonderful. I love the sense of hope that lingers underneath the words. Will check out the music later :)

so i ended up listening to this one first, and i really like the lyrics quite a bit. i really like how it sort of comes full circle in the end, you don't see that often anymore.

i haven't seen any gay cowboy movie either, so i have no reference of it sounding like anything except a beautiful song.

Seriously, those are some really great lyrics. I'm not saying you're the next Dylan, but damn...just some great visuals and feeling. I'm proud of you, son.

Thanks, guys. Very much enjoy the feedback, and it lifts me up to know someone enjoys it....I hope the material that is going to actually make it on to the record is as well received as this has been.

That song sounds really good. I like the verse a lot, even more due to the fact that you took a rather unspectacular chord and melody progression and made it something individual, a part of your self and your own. I'd love to hear some harmonica to this.

Yeah, it's a favorite chord of mine lately. I seem to go through phases with chords, using them in 5 or 6 songs and then moving on. I don't know its official name, but I know it's like playing Dadd9 except leaving the G string open.

I wish to gods I had access to a harmonica player, since my own attempts failed miserably, but it's one of those few instruments that I can't play and no one I know can play.

I used to play it a lot, but that was years back. Now I don't even own one anymore... I keep on wanting to pick it up again though.
