There are many available banks of percussion sounds online (Oink) that sound much better than the ones Reason comes with. I couldn't make anything worthwhile with them until I used other sounds.

Yeah if you take the sounds as they are most of them don't sound very good, but I just played around with velocity, level, tone and so on to make it sound a little more realistic...

if you use the nn-xt you can have one drum have several samples that span velocity, so it sounds more authentic. so soft hits sounds like soft hits and not a quiet loud hit. also you can give two samples to the same note and velocity and have them alternate to make rolls more believeable.
