I like the sun behind the clouds in that sunset pic, ceebs. Are you wearing loafers?

Great pics Ben, where were those taken? Post some pics of downtown Wilmington if you get a chance. I love that place. I went there for my anniversary one year, lots of great bars. I think one was called the Copper Penny, one was something like Fat Tony's, and one that had a bar on the roof overlooking Cape Fear was nice too. And an awesome pizza place open late.

Anyway, this thread is for anyone and everyone who wants to post pictures, so post away.

You do know downtown Wilmington dscan, and I know all those places too. The "rooftop bar" is Level 5 and The City Stage theater is up there too.
I'll try to get some familiar pics for you.

My previous pics were from a quick trip to the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden and Lake Norman.

I was in Rockingham tagging along on a UNCW Geology field trip last week to the Vulcan granite quarry.

i played around heavy with the d60's settings this weekend and got some shots that were pretty bad lighting-wise but at least show potential (they'd look better if i had photoshop or something). i chased the dog around for over and hour and got three decent shots:

Is your dog a shitzu? My brother has 2 that look like that.

I love shots of tree branches in the winter, especially in low light when it's a silhouette (sp?). Something about the way the branches spread out like tributaries from a river. Anyway, good stuff C_B.

I had a bunch of shots of Boston last week, but when I uploaded them to my parents computer I must've selected to delete them from my camera cuz when I got home they were gone. So I won't be able to post anything until I go back for New Year's but hopefully other people continue to. :D

I looked hard at buying the d60 but I didn't see enough reason to spend the extra money. Instead, I saved the extra cash on the d40 and bought a zoom lens.

i would rather have a d40 and zoom lens myself. the megapixel difference can be seen at times with the d60. vibration reduction is kinda cool. the camera itself, i think, is a bit sturdier. but there's not a whole lot different between the two, though.

I'm looking at getting one of the Nikon DSLRs and trying to figure out which body is "good enough" for me. From what I've seen I thought the vibration reduction was in the lenses, not the body. The megapixel difference is the only thing I notice between the 40 and 60 and the focus area is the big difference between the 60 and 80. I don't trust online reviews so I've just looked all over Nikon's site and specifically here: http://www.nikonusa.com/Assets/Common-A ... re2008.pdf

The zoom lens I bought has vibration reduction in it. I know that the D40 does not have an auto-focus feature so you would need to buy lenses that have the feature. Therefore, it is possible that it is the same with vibration reduction - if you have a D40 you will need to buy a lens with VR and all higher models will have VR in the body. You could also just buy a tripod and eliminate the need for VR.
The best question to ask is how big do you plan on making your prints? I've never printed anything larger than 8x10 so I was happy to buy the camera with less megapixels.

dscan, I'm thinking along the same lines as you, 8x10 is all I'll probably print. I'm looking at some 8x12s a friend had printed of pics from a Yankee game. He has the D40 and I'm not sure of the lens but it does not have VR and the pics are incredible. You can see the seams on the baseball and read "New York Yankees" on the bases. He says his seats were not great and he was resting his arm on the railing.

Anyway, thanks dscan, you and everyone in this thread have inspired me to take my photography to the next level.

Everyone's pictures are really beautiful! Do any of you guys ever use prime lenses instead of zoom lenses? I ask because I'm going to be buying a digital SLR camera next month, most likely the Canon Rebel XS, and am trying to decide what the first lens I should invest in is. Any hints or tips?

not as yet, a prime lens in next on my list though, Nikon are about to bring out a 50mm 1.4 with autofocus built into the lens so it'd be perfect for my d40x. I'm uncertain whether to get this or an older cheaper manual focus lens

so the VBR on my d60 is apparently broken. the entire lens shakes when i turn it on :x

i shot today with a d100 with 18-200 mm lens. fucking awesome! fun as hell. i don't usually get that sort of lens to play with.

what do you mean it shakes? is the lens actually vibrating on its own?

yes. looking through the viewfinder, one could assume there is an earthquake going down. makes a fair deal of noise, too, when it happens. for now i just keep it off.
