I don't really do portraits, I do this:

You can't set that kinda stuff up. You just kinda wing it knowing in general what you're trying to capture. I try never my best to take pictures of people when they aren't expecting it. You get a more genuine shot. So trying to "portrait" in real life...it just doesn't work.

I've been playing around with an old moon picture after seeing this website

this is what I've got so far:

from this

to this

needs abit more practice and a better pic of the moon (or a telescope to take them through!)

What are you trying to accomplish there flips. The first one looks way better than the second. In fact, the first one is excellent in and of itself. It doesn't need anything.

I'm luke warm on this one. This is 5 exposers processed in photomatix. There's some noise in the tree to the right and some of the branches didn't line up right (even with a tripod!). But this was one spot were several of these blossoming trees were growing in a row and I wanted to capture it.

Here's 2 I took last week in Boston. The first one was a trick I learned for Camera Raw; sort of like HDR but with only one exposure. I exposed for the sky and so the alley was dark. When I opened it up in raw, I made my adjustments and opened it in photoshop. Then I opened the same image back and raw, and moved the exposure slider so that it exposed for the alley and blew out the sky. Then I just stacked the photos on top of each other and masked out the blown out sky. After I had already flattened it, I noticed a patch around the "Oyster House" sign that was overexposed and tried to burn it but it didn't turn out so great.
I realize only a handful of people know what I'm talking about, but anyway...
Image

This one was taken from my hotel room on the 25th floor. I forgot my tripod so I had to place the camera on a few books and turn off all the lights in the room. It was a 20 second exposure.

I know, I'm picky with my stuff.
The colors, contrast, and blending came out very well. But if you open it up and look closely at the branches, especially in the top left, it gets kind of fuzzy. I could fix most of that by cropping most of it out but the trees are what I liked best about the picture.

If the noise bothers you that much, i'd say crop the pic. The trees don't add too much to the pic anyway, i'd say for me it's all in the blossoms of the other trees that are the most interesting. And now that I see the pic a bit bigger i'd def cut the piece off since the very bright light coming through the benches there draws too much attention and the magenta edges aren't very appealing either.
Not to completely break down your picture here, just some thoughts, cause i do still think it's a good shot!!

I like this one too. Fits the picture I've always had in my mind of suburban America. Where was it taken?

A few streets from my house, in Roanoke, Virginia.

Right, finally managed to attempt some HDR.

First Attempt:
Image

Another Go: (It was pretty windy here as you can see by the clouds!!!)
Image

And another: (I'm aware of the dirt at the top :? )
Image
(I've got another version of this at work where I've altered the saturation, I'll post it tomorrow)

They were all compiled in Photomatix using 5 Exposures.

Nice pics. Also, I knew you were from the UK, but I just noticed you are from Manchester. 8) Elbow, one of my favorite bands, is from there. And a good friend of mine now living in LA is from there.

Cheers,

Elbow hail from my hometown, Bury. And the above pictures were taken on Holcombe Hill,
which you may recognise from one of their B-Sides for Forget Myself, Strangeways to Holcombe Hill in 4:20

I thought I'd inject some more life into this thread.

I'm not sure what works best: colour or black and white.
